If FedEx tries to deliver a pacakge but no one is home to sign, can you pick it up from them?
I'm getting a new phone in the mail and they require a signature, however I'm almost never home when they normally deliver. Does anyone have experience with this? I'd rather not sign the release for them to leave it as I've had packages left for me stolen recently.

I'm pretty sure you can call fedex to schedule a delivery time. I'm looking for more information on that right now.
edit: So it looks like I might have been slightly mistaken. It seems as if fedex has an option where the buyer can schedule a delivery time.
I have been able to pick up from Fed Ex. They are often open after hours and on weekends in my area - which is unusual considering that almost everything else here closes at 6.
I just dealt with this last week on a beer deliver to my house - required a 21-yr-old plus signature. Call and request it be held at the nearest sort facility, but call before you head over to confirm it's there. Sometimes customer support is a little iffy when handling this circumstance.
Sometimes I leave a note asking them to leave the package without a signature.
Oh man, I have so much experience with this...
When my laptop was being shipped to me, they tried to deliver it three times (1 pm every time) and then I had to request to pick it up from the local fedex distributer.
I suggest calling the support number that is left with the "we tried to deliver a package" slip. Yeah, you'll get a phone tree, yeah you'll probably be routed to india but it wasn't too hard to tell them that I wanted to pick it up at the local warehouse. Fortunately the warehouse was located in my city and not in a neighboring one or anything like that.
Hope it works out well!
You might also try calling this specific number (it's still toll free, and it's Fedex).
1 877 339 2774
Their official number is 1 800 463 3339
Hopefully they won't ask you for your account number on the former. I don't recall whether one is necessary, but I don't think it is.
So to answer my own question for those curious in the future, you can pick up your packages. The slip they left me had an address you could go to and the time the package would be back off the truck. All you needed to do was bring an ID and they'd sign it off to you.
