I have never, ever understood fantasy football. Probably because I don't even realize how an actual draft works. Or follow football.

@holymythos: Okay, the first time I attempted to wrap my mind around it, it was pretty much the same struggle for me.

Basically, it's like in highschool when two people drew for teams, except there will be a lot more teams. There is a stock of players and we'll each draw from that stock -- Each team will obtain a quarterback, 2 or 3 running backs, 2 or three wide receivers, a tight end, a kicker and a defense (the defense is actually the entire defensive team. For example if I pick Steelers defense, then that's who I get). Then, each team will pick some reserve players in the event that someone else has a by-week (they don't play that week) or they get injured, or just plain suck. No two teams can have the same player. You are allowed to make trades through-out the season with either un-teamed players or with another team if that team agrees to the trade.

Now that all the teams have been picked, you will build your line-up for this week's games...

CONTINUED ... you will post your team up for play. They will take the individual stats from each player (their real stats from in-game) and put them into a fantasy-point chart, and reward each player the total amount of fantasy-points they scored this week. For example, each player can earn points for receiving touchdowns, for each yard of receiving or rushing, and the quarterbacks get points for passing yards and TD passes, while the kickers get points for extra points and field goals. You can also be penalized for fumbles or interception passes. Defense scores points based on how well the other team performs against them, in addition to fumbles recovered and interceptions.

They total all of your fantasy-players' points together and come up with a total. That total is compared to whoever you went head-to-head with that week and results in a win or loss.

CONTINUED ... While it seems pretty self-explanatory and simple, the variables for each player (who they play against, who else on their team is healthy, are they battling and injury, is it supposed to be warm/rainy/snowy/bitter cold) can throw a wrench into things. A lot of it is based on a bit of intuition and reading up on each player, and the rest is total luck. Anything can happen and the unexpected can always happen.

@rubberduckythug: Don't forget there is automating picking based your on your wants/needs. You don't actually have to be at your computer at the time of the draft.

And all the calculation happens automatically from a nice little ESPN webpage so you don't have to track anything yourself!

And the draft will be Tuesday at 7 central/ 8 eastern.

He will then get you setup and send you an official invite that you will have to accept. Accepting requires you register at the ESPN website (it's free and takes almost no time)

@miquinn: You are correct that you have to wait until the draft to start adding players. Be aware that when it is your time to pick you have 120 seconds or the system will do it for you.

@capguncowboy - The Draft order will be random. Either by @snapster or ESPN.com's randomizer (which does it an hour prior to draft).

@capguncowboy: So am I. The draft is one of the best parts of FFL. Thanks for asking that question on draft order as I thought based on team pages it would be the invite order also. I am actually glad to hear it will be random - more interesting.

I think it would be fitting if @snapster randomly picked the draft order.

@mfladd: Yeah we've always done random. Spices it up a bit! We actually make a big deal of it at work - sort of like a real lottery. We call everyone into the conference room and draw the names out of a helmet. Ha

@miquinn: Right. Once a player is picked then he is not eligible to be picked again. So everyone has a unique team. You can trade/drop/add players throughout the season though!

And the draft is a "snake" draft which means:

and so forth. It helps because getting last in the draft doesn't automatically mean you're screwed!

Besides the timing the biggest reason we closed it was to keep the league to 14 teams (plus an even number) - I personally have not enjoyed leagues greater than 12, due to the lack of talent depth, injuries, etc.

I am sorry - I wish you could have posted sooner. But there is always next year!

@capguncowboy: Hey Wootin-Tootin, as far the drafting spots go it's hard to say, I don't know where I would want to be. I think I might like the 6-7 slot. All I can say is everybody better make picks 3-4 count.
