Is Valentines Day a good day to be single?
Do you think that unless you are in a monogamous or have any special relationship, that this holiday is just about commercialism trying to get you to spend way too much money on people you normally would not?

Personally, I think any day is a good day to be single. Yes, Valentine's day is commercialized, what special day isn't? The point of the day, though, is to express one's affection toward whomever you have that "special" relationship with. Of course, if it's not that special, ignore the day and become single again. It works for me.
@nortonsark: Arbor day isn't all that commercialized.
Personally, I like being single and I also like being a little bit pessimistic, so Valentine's day is a great way for a single guy like me to have a reason to be pessimistic and all "This day only started because some guy was brutally executed for breaking the law." Is it right, morally? Not really, but it's fun.
Can recall some great gifts when I was single but I love getting a card, flowers or roses from my husband on Valentine's Day. It is really sweet.
Hell yeah. Save some money and avoid crowded places.
When I was in college, there was a guy who hung around the Christian fellowship where I lived and spent a lot of time. Dmitry was one of those awkward people who just didn't really fit in all that well anywhere (part of it was because he lived in Russia until he was 12 and his family moved to New Orleans). But he found a place with us.
One year, around Valentine's Day he got someone to drive him to the grocery store where he bought a bag of chocolate heart candies (which was an extravagance for him. As he really was a starving college student). He gave them to all of the girls who regularly hung out at the Christian fellowship and didn't have boyfriends. His explanation was that he knew that sometimes it was tough for single girls around Valentine's Day and he didn't want any of us to feel lonely or unloved or anything. And he was totally sincere, wasn't doing it to try to get a date or anything. Best Valentine I've EVER received.
I hate Valentine's Day period. Single or not. I just got done expending a tremendous amount of time, energy, creativity, and money being a good boyfriend for Christmas. Now I'm supposed to do it again for a commercial holiday? Oh and the GF's b-day is in March. I'll pass on doing anything besides making a nice dinner.
....but not to digress from the question, I think it could be a good day to be single. A lot of people feel down about being single on V-day and hit the bars. Could be a great opportunity to strike up a conversation and meet some folks.
