Rear Projection? LED? Tube?
So I am looking to get a big TV.. I have looked into projectors and that is not an option for the place that I live.. I do not have a spare room to make a 'movie room' therefore, I must make the living room awesome. Which brings me to the question of whether to buy a 60" LED or a 60" Rear Projection. I've done a little research on them and was surprised to find so many great reviews on the rear projection. Does anyone have experience with both an LED and Rear Projection TV that could give me opinions on them? If I had the money of course I'd spring for the LED TV right away.. So I guess the real question is.. Is it worth 1200ish dollars more for the LED?
If you have not so much room and want a big image form a projector, consider using a mirror.
To me the biggest difference, other than cost, is the viewing angles. On a rear projection set you will get 45 degree optimum viewing angle, about 90 degree acceptable, and the rest will be pretty bad where as a LCD/LED set should offer 160 degrees optimum viewing angle.
I'm sure there are other considerations too, but this was the single biggest issue for me and why I chose an LCD even with the extra cost.
definitely make the rear projection your last choice. Consider a plasma - they are cheaper than LCD, movies look great on them, and new plasmas are long life like LCD with much improved contrast and response time
I have a 52" DLP Mitsu from 2006 - still works like a champ and the shades of black could not be any better. I also have a 47" Mtisu rear CRT from 2000 (this is a 200 lbs monster) w/ only one 1080p input - works great if not better than the DLP (no bulb). But when the CRT guns eventually go out, this one is a goner.
Go for DLP if you could still find one!
DLPs are fine except for two things: viewing angle and expensive lamps. You essentially have to be sitting straight on to see a good picture on a DLP television, whereas a lot of LED sets offer almost 180 degree viewing angles. When the lamps on a DLP burn out (doesn't happen for a while), they are also quite expensive to replace. I would also consider a plasma television, but at those larger sizes it might not be optimal, since the "pixels" on a plasma are larger than on an LCD panel, so the picture may appear slightly grainy or pixelated compared to an LCD television.
When you buy that cheap rear projection TV, people are going to sit down in your living room and see a cheap rear projection TV.
You're also going to end up with an extra foot or so of space below the screen where the obnoxiously large TV speaker is located and you're going to strain your back trying to place it as your wife directs.
Spend the money, get the honey.
i just went through this, and i tried out a bunch of different projectors, but ultimately I went for an LED projector because of it's longevity, and it's versatility. the plasma projectors are great, and the color spectrum looks beautiful, but if you use multimedia as much as i do you are going to end up spending anywhere from 200-600 dollars every couple months, as the plasma and LCD projectors need a replacement bulb every 3000-5000 hours. LED bulbs are cheap, and they need to be replaced every 20,000-30,000 hours. This was a huge draw for me, especially when I saw how the LED stacked up against the other projectors. The image quality was the same, some of the plasma projectors dealt with ambient light a little better, whereas the LED model I currently have requires almost complete darkness to get the best picture out of it.
LED also has a lower price point in many cases, many options are much more mobile as well. Good luck and try to keep yourself as informed as you can!
I own the following. 82" and 73" Mitsu DLP, 50" sammy plasma, 42 panny plasma, 32 sammy lcd, 46" toshiba rear projection, and 24" off-brand LCD. In the 60" arena it easy, buy a plasma. I've seen last years sammy 58" plasma for under 1500. The crap about viewing angles is not really a real world concern as who watches their TV from a 75 degree angle anyway. The motion blur of plasma is the best, black levels are the best, and they are cheaper than LCD/LED. If you go bigger than 65" it is DLP all the way. You ever price the 75" plasma? BTW the 2009 and up mitsu dlp's, all the bulbs are only 99 bucks.
@werty7777: I bought a 60" Mitsu DLP in 2009. I could not be happier with my purchase. While the prices are getting closer, I would still buy the same TV today.
