Philippians 4:11 - Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

I couldn't come up with any better words than these to answer the question.

No, I could use an extra bazillion dol... uh, never mind.

In the words of John Cougar Mellencamp, "I need a lover that won't drive me crazy."

Pretty much, yes.

While I could use a bit more money coming in, I generally live well within my means and even if my income were to magically double I don't think I'd make any major changes in my day-to-day life.

@lpgstock: you say, "There is always something material that we may want whether it be Woot stuff or bigger yet, better jobs, better relationships..." Neither jobs nor relationships are material; relationships, in particular, seem like the most immaterial of all human needs! (I'm using the secondary definition of "immaterial" as "spiritual, not physical" as the rhetorical opposite of "material.")

There many ways to define needs; I usually think of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. I certainly have all that I need to sustain myself physiologically, but I wish that I had a greater sense of psychological/emotional safety. I have self-esteem and confidence when it comes to things that I do, but I have a hard time accepting that others might value me for who I am, rather than what I do. If the goal is survival, I don't "need" to believe others might care about me for who I am; if the goal is happiness, it might be more of a "need."

The only need I have right now is to quit smoking.

We just got a higher speed internet installed.

Yes, I have it all. :D

I have much, much more than I need. I have a house, a car, a good paying often interesting and challenging job, good family, good friends. I never have to worry about what I'm going to eat or what I'm going to wear. Clean, drinkable water comes out of the faucets in my house. I can buy just about anything I want to eat at any time of the year at one of a ton of stores a few miles or less from my house. I have cats who think I'm the coolest person in the world, especially when I give them food or play with them. I'm healthy. I don't fear for my physical safety. I have this amazing little box that lives on my table that I can look up just about anything I ever want to know, communicate with people, buy things that then show up at my door a few days later and I can take this box just about anywhere and do all of those things.
I have all that I need and so very much more. Unfortunately I also want more. But, yeah, I've got what I need.

Neuropsychosocial@ thank you for your corrections although the drift of my comments are unchanged. That is what I get for minoring in psychology... I know just enough to be dangerous! :)

What more can I ask for? I'm an American, I have a woman that loves me and an amazing son who is the light of my life. I have a good job and I might get a better one on Saturday. I'm sure if I had an Aston Martin I might be a little bit happier with my life but not by much

@jsimsace: I used the gum and it worked flawlessly, it was tough at first but after the 5th day I no longer needed the gum and it's been 6 months!! ( I smoked a pack a day for 6 years)

If you remember that quote you are feeling as old as you need to be :)

@jsimsace: The 1st time I managed to quit, I used the patches. I was smoke free for a year, but due to some extreme stress and a few beers I started back up. Several years later I was smoking a pack a day of the little cigars and went cold turkey. Been smoke free now for 5 or 6 years.

@jseureau: @woadwarrior: Thanks for the encouragement and advice. I've been at 1 pack or less per day for almost 30 years, and I hate it. I want to kick the habit...just not sure when. I'm thinking about my 50th birthday as a target date in a couple of months. Seriously. Thanks again and happy wooting! @lpgstock: Sorry, thread hijack wasn't intended. :)

I'm pretty content with my life. I learned to become a more understanding and kinder person and met and fell in love with an incredible guy who loves me back. We are happy and healthy. My family is happy and healthy. We always seem to have just enough money to pay the bills and a little extra for fun. I like my life and I like myself.

Geeez..my bitterness is slowing being ruined. :\

@jsimsace: I also turn 50 in a couple months.

vote-for3vote-against

I THANK GOD for making me the luckest guy in the world!

@jsimsace: Are you kidding me? If this post helps lead someone to stop smoking I'll be, pardon the pun, stoked!!

I have what I need, now to get what I want...

vote-for3vote-against

yep. Sure, I'd like to take fancy vacations, buy a new car, own the latest toys, etc, but I have a nice place to live, a car that runs well, a wonderful wife & kids, and we're all relatively healthy and manage to pay our bills every month; We even manage to save a bit for retirement.

vote-for2vote-against

Much like everyone else I feel like I have more then I could have asked for. And it's nice to see a thread full of people who can appreciate what they have.

@woadwarrior: Thanks again for the support. I WILL make it happen. Congrats on your new smoke-free life! @lpgstock: Thanks for your understanding of a crippling nasty habit that I am going to get rid of, and soon. I just have to quit procrastinating....maybe in a couple of months? LOL humor thrown in there for sarcastic purposes. @jseureau: Congrats on your new smoke-free life! That's awesome....if you've gone this far, you've got it licked.

I suppose I have all of my basic needs met. We are young, though, and money is tight. But my husband and I are (relatively) healthy, he survived deployments with the Marines and is now studying for his Bachelor's degree, our daughter is healthy, happy, smart, funny, and SWEET, and we have a roof over our heads and food in our bellies. So technically, yes, I have everything I NEED, but everything I want? No. Not at all! I want SO MUCH MORE! That's why we dream, though, right??
