If you want to go without a case, there is a heck of a deal that I just posted on XtremeGuard. Get 85% off. The FULL BODY protection is listed as $10.99. Enter the coupon code for it and get it for about $1.65 (heck-buy a couple). This will keep the device looking like new and not detract from the looks of the phone. It is worth it just for resale value. They have some basic, slim or TPU cases as well that are part of the sale.

Best is subjective; some folks need the it-will-survive-a-drop-off-the-ladder-while-I-work level of protection, others not. I do agree that by keeping it looking new, it'll definitely be worth more on the resale market down the line.

My local 99-cents only stores here (SoCal) has a variety of iPhone 5/5s TPU cases, edge bumpers, and screen protectors available; that's about as affordable (at retail) as they come.

I agree with @morriea if you are not concerned about extreme circumstances. However, if you want waterproof and shockproof, I recommend the Lifeproof cases. My wife and I both have them on our 5's, and she had one for her 4, as well. Both phones have survived several traumas with nary a scratch.

@okham: How does the Lifeproof compare with the Otterbox Defender series? The Lifeproof is supposed to be waterproof, but is it. and is it dustproof? Have you noticed any problems with people hearing you?

@wilfbrim: I find it less clunky than the otter box, and it is fully waterproof and dust proof. I haven't had any problem with people hearing me, but it does muffle the external speakers a bit.

@okham: I tried to edit this post last night, after some research, but it didn't take.

The Lifeproof case is ONLY for the iPhone 5. They do not have a case for the 5C, or the 5S. The fingerprint sensor on the 5S is going to cause some hearburn for manufacturers. Right now there isn't any indication when/if Lifeproof is going to have a case for either 5C or 5S. Otterbox does make a Defender for the 5S, but not their extremely durable Preserver series.

@wilfbrim: Yeah, I forgot about the fingerprint sensor. In that case, I would recommend a Zagg whole body protector. I don't think you'll be able to to find a fully waterproof case that will work with the scanner for a while.

My company sells these and I personally carry my iPhone 5S in an FDE version of one of these.

Magpul makes military grade accessories for firearms and their venture into iPhone cases incorporates a lot of technologies from the other side of their business.

I used to have an Otter, but since switching to a Magpul iPhone case could not be happier. There are pros and cons to both, but I like mine a lot. It is slim and non slippery. But it is not fully waterproof like Lifeproof or other cases. I just do not go swimming with mine :-)
