We change our in-frige filter every 6 months as recommended.

Me. I have a brita pitcher with filter, also. In addition, I have a fancy tester for water. I have a water softener. I prefer not to add salt to my coffee. Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

{The filters are viciously expensive, but I like the water that comes out of my pitcher.}

i've gone a long time before but my new fridge has a 6 month reminder on the door. i'm on the second to last bar which means "order now"
unfortunately i don't appreciate my appliances sassing off to me, so we'll see who wins this round

I've used a Brita pitcher for years and generally run the filters about 20-25% over their suggested life span for the amount of water I run through them.

Note that this is only for drinking water, as I live in NY City and thus have some of the best water in the world, stright from my kitchen faucet. In truth, I think the main thing the Brita filters do is remove chlorine.

We have 3 Brita pitchers: cold, counter, and on my desk at work. I usually let the timer run out and then reset it again before I change them out, which is twice as long as you should get out of them, but my theory is that since we use all three regularly, we don't run all that water through just one filter.

We use a PUR pitcher, and we change the filter when the indicator light goes solid red. It takes the guesswork out of it!

When we were using a pitcher we used to go a bit over the recommended time, but not by much because you could tell by the taste that it needed to be changed. Since we switched to an under-counter filter I think we are going to have to change them more frequently than the recommended time. We have quite a bit of sediment in our water and our first set of filters clogged up before our six months was up and caused the system to leak. We got a new set of filters and a new housing unit. Now we're just keeping an eye on it to see when/if it becomes problematic again!!

@bongosolo: I have the same Pur water system and have often wondered if the indicator changes to orange then red by the number of times water is poured through it, or by the number of times the lid if off and the pitcher filled and lid replaced, or by the filter actually giving some sort of reading to the indicator. I seriously use it only for my animals, a glass or two of water myself and coffee. I never fill it full - only for what I need for any given time because it filters so slowly, and have often thought that maybe the filter is really OK. However, being paranoid to a degree, when it wants to be changed it is.
