It's a known problem. CALL them. You just got hit much, much later than most. I'm about to bail for the evening, but I'll be back with more information tomorrow, if you don't find it before then.

I just talked to Amazon Customer support.. and wow.. just wow.. I told him the issues and here is what I got..:

"Okay, can you please try removing the leather case as it might be also the issue"

First off, it's the official Amazon Leather Kindle Case that came out with the 3rd Gen Kindle (nothing special.. just 2 hooks that attack to the side of the kindle and then then it closes like a book with a stretchy strap that keeps it in place when you aren't using it.. (non lighted one)

"Can you please reboot the kindle now"..

fine.. did that (again) for the sake of basic troubleshooting.

"It should now be alright
Please see if the rebooting issue is been occuring and let us know so that we can determine it it is the cover and replace the cover"

This was of no use

@devexityspace: It's the cover. Insist that they replace the Kindle (and the cover). Do it now. Call them during daylight hours (between 9 and 4 Pacific), and be persistent. The cover's little hooks have plastic that wears off, exposing metal, and shorting out your internals. I almost certainly made posts here, on Deals, back when I went through this (but am too lazy to find them).

Stick to your guns.

This should also be on the Amazon forums, although quite a while back...

My email exchanges with Amazon took place around December in 2010. I'm surprised that they didn't just bit the bullet and get rid of all those covers. Bad Amazon. Bad bad bad.

There are also a lot of comments related to this in the reviews for those covers. I have this version Kindle and the same cover, purchased shortly after Christmas 2010. I haven't had any trouble yet, but I sure hope I'm not due to start having it soon!

My mother did not have a cover and started having serious problems in under a year. I believe she sent it back to them so they could look at it and they eventually sent her a new one. She was pretty firm and no-nonsense about them taking care of this. I think if you are just insistent about it, they will take care of you -- they really want good word of mouth for the kindles.

Had similar problems with mine. Contacted Amazon and it was replaced immediately. Could not have been easier!

@loubriccant: OT: Thrilled to see you!!

On topic: As so many have said, this is a known problem, and is most likely caused by your cover. Amazon is great about 'fixing' your broken K3. A hint for the future - buy Square Trade's warranty. It saved me when my K2 had terminal ghosting problems. It was just out of the 1 yr. Amazon warranty.

Thanks for the input! I contacted Amazon back and got a credit towards the newly revamped version of the 3rd gen case which hopefully fixed the issues that the previous model had.

@gmwhit: Thanks! Good to virtually see you, too!

@loubriccant: You probably have no idea how much this means to me. I am more than pleased. Thank you for returning, if only for a moment.

@gmwhit: I'll be around as much as I can, but like I said in another thread (I think, the posts are starting to run together on me), I may not be posting as many deals, but I'll try to stay active on this side, as well as making comments on certain deals.

Like I said somewhere else, I really have missed a good many of you! :)
