I love my Bose Companion 3 system - great sound and lots of bass. It may be discontinued, though, and a little pricey. Did you have a budget in mind?

Logitech z5500

But get ready to shell a bit of money for them.

About 10 years ago I purchased a Altek Lansing 5.1 sterio surround system for my computer. It is still runing strong today. I can't say the same for my Bose and Logitech speakers I purchased within the last 5 years for my wife's computer.

@bogie21: I've had 2 different Logitech sets in the past 8 years. Never had a problem with either of them.

I had the z680s (refurbished), then upgraded to the newer version (z5500s -- new) when the price got low enough. When I upgraded, I was able to sell my old set for more than I paid for it 4 years before. I have never even considered purchasing another brand in the time that I've had them. They sound great, they rattle the windows when you turn them up to about half-volume and have multiple inputs to choose from.

I do know people that have gotten stuff from the budget line of Logitech, and they've been pleased and logitech's support department is great.

I think unless you're willing to hand over a considerable amount of money these days, you can't expect much from computer accessories

A little bit more info would help like are you looking for a surround or 2.1 system? What's your price range?

My opinion from reading a whole bunch of reviews are that Bose systems are overpriced for the sound and quality although buyers in general seem to be happy with them. The system mentioned above has a little trouble if you want the volume way up and the mids are not the best.

@danthyonross: I'm guessing you meant "coincidentally", not "ironically" ;-)

I have a set of Logitech Z2300s (2.1 system), and some Klipsch ProMedia GMX D-5.1 speakers. Both great; clear audio, and I can shake the room if I turn them up. I'm using the Klipsch system in my living room for gaming+movies, and the Logitech one on my PC.

I picked up the M-Audio Studiophile AV40 speakers last Woot! off for $90. They were refurbs in perfect condition. Check out the Amazon reviews:

What is the "best"? How much are you willing to spend?

Assuming you have a soundcard that is good and quiet enough to match:

B&W MM-1: http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/iPod_and_Computer_Speakers/iPod_and_Computer_Speakers/MM-1/Overview.html - $499

Focal XS: http://www.xs-focal.com/ - about $599

NuForce Icon+Subwoofer: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=NUSX $4-600.

AudioEngine A5+AS8 Subwoofer: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=AUENA5 - about $700

KRK Rokit 5 active monitors: http://www.amazon.com/KRK-RP5G2-Powered-Monitor-Speaker/dp/B001A6G6CY - two for $300 (probably the "cheapest" of this bunch)

Axiom Audio ZeroByte with subwoofer: http://www.axiomaudio.com/audiobytecomputerspeakers.html - $560 (dependent on finish)...

Or if you are willing, have a good PCMCIA digital output to a high-end DAC (thousands), send it to a high-end sound system (thousands). The sky is the limit for the "best"...

BOSE is generally overpriced junk.
