I'm also in N Texas so it should be no surprise that I dislike the traffic.

I like the low cost of living, though.

@samstag: What you don't like that every major road in the area has been under construction for 10 years and has about 10 years left before completion.

I'm from New Jersey and I hate the taxes, the lack of open space, the traffic, and "The Jersey Shore". I like the beach, Wawa convenience stores, and the low(ish) gas prices.

vote-for5vote-against

I live in Virginia Beach.
I like that in cities of this size it is the #1 safest city.
I like that we have access to the beach and plenty of fun things to do.

I don't like our congested traffic
I don't like the ridiculously aggressive drivers (I've met people from all around who have passed through here and had the same complaint about Virginia Beach drivers).
I don't like the lack of non-military, non-tourist attraction jobs available.

In the suburb area I'm in, we keep popping up new neighborhoods but don't do anything to support the traffic flow. For years they've made plans to expand one main road and extend another, but it's a low priority contract (the workers get to it if they have nothing else to do. No, not making this up).

I also live in North Texas.

Pros:
Mild winters
Very nice weather in spring and fall
Low cost of living
Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, & Dallas Stars :)
Tex-Mex, BBQ, steak

Cons:
Summer (especially when it gets over 100)
Traffic

vote-for4vote-against

@thefenst: I hate the summers, already dreading the next few months.

I'm from the Buffalo, NY area. I love that we have 4 seasons, You can buy a 4 bedroom 2 bath house in a nice neighborhood with a good sized yard for 150k, We get no hurricanes, no earthquakes, no big tornadoes (The ones we do get can't even take a roof off your house) We have cheap water (Great Lakes FTW!), and there is no shortage of things to do. Jobs are plentiful in medical research and financial sectors, and the highways move at about 70 mph, even during rush hour.

What I dislike about Buffalo is the high (New York) taxes, and the winter that drags on. Buffalo doesn't actually get as much snow as most places, but when we do get snow, it's normally a blizzard and melts a few days later.

I live in South Alabama.

Which I was further north to get a bit more change of seasons.

And summer starts about late March and runs through the end of Oct here.

Northern NV. It's like CA without the hippies and PIT!

Seattle area (well, closer to Tacoma): Dislike the rain and gray days, but it makes you appreciate the sun more I think (and you get used to the rain). I love the summers here, where it doesn't get too hot, and the winters where it doesn't get too cold. I love being close to the ocean and the mountains and having so much greenery around. I love the Pacific Northwest and hope I never have to move away from it.

vote-for4vote-against

@mtm2: My wife is from the far upper northwest corner of Alabama. It is a pretty area and we have considered the Huntsville area as a possibility.

I'm in Poway, which is in San Diego county. I love how close I am (within 30 minutes) of the beaches, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, some really awesome malls, and about a 90 minute or less drive to Disneyland. The weather is almost always nice and sunny too. Where I'm currently at, I'm also within a very good and easy walking distance to Walmart, 3 grocery stores, and a movie theater, to name a few. The city is wonderful, safe, has really good schools, and is just an all-around great place to live, IMO.

The only con is that, while the sun is nice, I would actually prefer a bit cooler weather, at least from time to time. I don't think I wore a jacket once this past winter.

I do not mind hot, hot weather; therefore, living in sw Florida weatherwiswe is great for me. I love the proximity to Gulf and Atlantic, in my area the arts, low taxes (no income for example). I dislike intensly the traffic during the tourist season but I do recognize that having folks who love to come here during that time keep the taxes low and support a lot of the arts and sports as well. I like being near the cruiseports and having my choice of 4 airports within from 20 min to 1-1/2 hours. It also helps to live somewhere where dear friends like to come for a visit! Overall AAA+

vote-for8vote-against

I'm in Seattle from Dallas, there is no Tex-Mex and that is the saddest thing.

Otherwise, I don't have to have a car (though traffic sucks if you do), the weather is always cool (no 100 degree record breaking days), the "rain" they get up here is nothing like actual rain so it's completely survivable, there are mountains, trees and water all over the place, and the public transportation is pretty awesome.

I do miss thunderstorms. And taxes are higher (though still no state tax) but cost of living in general is much higher.

I'm a Texan and will always be, but I just don't see me ever moving back.

I live about 45 minutes from Los Angeles. Weather is great, crime is very low. It is expensive to live so be prepared to pay a lot in rent if you are renting. My one bedroom apartment goes for over $1500. The great thing about living here is that we are so close to Hollywood, LAX and Disneyland.

vote-for5vote-against

@klozitshoper: Hi! :-D Fellow Floridian here. I live in the Central Florida area...near Disney. Ugh! Never been there-no intentions of going. LOVE hot weather - a definite pro to me. Conversely, it does get cold here on occasion, even freezes. Con.

No state income tax, no tax on food (exception: restaurants because it's served), low car tag fees & on & on. Home owners insurance very high - hurricanes, and the fact that we pay to insure those who buy mega-million $$ homes on the coasts. They are "uninsurable." grrrr.

Close to both the Gulf & the Atlantic. Great fishing in lakes. Have lived here over 30 years, would move south. Difficult to sell a house now; it's a buyer's market. Not sure of the job situation, most likely not good.

vote-for3vote-against

@agingdragqueen: The line about no Tex-Mex is very sad. A friend of mine from Texas but living in Jinja, Uganda, messaged me today to say go have some Tex-Mex and a Dr Pepper for me. I would have said Tex-Mex with a Margarita, but to each their own.

vote-for4vote-against

Arkansas Ozarks:

Good - low cost of living, natural beauty, abundant natural resources, clean air and water

Meh - taxes (low real estate, high sales tax), jobs (depends on field)

Not - ticks, chiggers, allergens, ice storms!

vote-for4vote-against

@dw1771: the lack of Tex-Mex is a lot more disappointing than I ever thought it would be. No one seems to know how to make a decent margarita either.

But oh well, I still have family and friends down there. When I went in February I probably gained 15lbs from enchiladas alone.

I live in the San Francisco bay area and the best thing here is the weather, it is truly perfect. There's so much to do: festivals, concerts, lots of cool bars and restaurants. Close to the ocean, the mountains and the forest so there's also lots of great outdoor activities.

The cons are too many people, crowds, lines, traffic and a high cost of living, especially housing and taxes. We talk all the time of moving somewhere but every place we look the weather is a deal breaker. I don't like snow, hot summers or humidity and that pretty much excludes everywhere but here.

vote-for3vote-against

@doxlee: I'm from a small town east of Lake Ontario. I think I'm one of those places that gets all the snow you talked about.

Pros: not much violent crime, quiet, tons of fresh air

Cons: over 200 inches of snow per average winter, hot & very humid summers, not a whole lot to do, have to travel about 30 - 35 miles to get decent paying jobs.

vote-for10vote-against

I'm an uneducated hillbilly and I am somehow one of the classiest dudes in town. If there were 10 dentists in town, you'd swear that 9 out of 10 of them recommend brushing your teeth with Fritos.

Best thing (well and sometimes the worst) is the number of tube tops you see around here.

I live in Lakeside, California and I like the weather, our house, our yard, the food, CostCo and our really, really tall pine trees.

What I don't like is the pine pollen from our really, really tall pine trees (I'm allergic) and our neighbors. Who complain about our really, really tall pine trees.

vote-for4vote-against

Charlottesville, Va. Here for school.
Likes: close to mountains and beach (relatively), decent seasons (I'd like a little more winter).
Dislikes: traffic (terrible for a relatively small city), referred to by folks from other areas of VA as the "Communist bastion of central VA" (I lean pretty conservative).

vote-for3vote-against

@dw1771: I've considered it too...but own a house here.

I'd rather have a job lined up to before pulling up roots here.

vote-for2vote-against

South Central Louisiana

Pluses: Food, people, fun, people, food, food, food....

Minuses: Heat, humidity, government. And by government I mean the current administration.

vote-for2vote-against

I live in Southern California (about 30 minutes away from San Diego), we have great coastal weather (most of the year is spent around 60-70 degrees!) but it comes with a high cost of living (a lot of houses have ocean views). The area I live in particular is rich, unfortunately some of the poorer areas are starting to develop gang related problems, drug use seems to be increasing as well.

The other annoyance would be all the marines, always getting drunk and causing a raucous, less of a problem should you buy instead of rent.

For shopping (like big malls or outlet malls) we have to travel a good 10-20 minutes.

Also have good public transportation, can take a bus or train pretty much anywhere in Orange or Riverside counties.

@davidschronic: Hi Davidschronic! What is PIT, please?

vote-for3vote-against

@dw1771: I feel like the construction is a national problem that you will have forever no matter where you live.

@lqotw: Personal Income Tax. As high as 10% in CA, no thanks! The Gamblers in NV pay mine...

@adadavis: Howdy neighbor! West central Arkansas here. Part River Valley and part Ozarks.

I live in "upstate" South Carolina - the northwest corner of the state near Georgia and North Carolina.

Love the fact that there are lots of places to do outdoorsy stuff - hiking, mountain biking, etc. Lots of mountains, water falls, lakes, etc.
Love the college football - GO CLEMSON!
Love the small town/college town combination.
Love the low cost of living.
Love that we are close to Atlanta and Charlotte (NC) without the big city headaches.

Would like to have more of a winter - we usually get one good snow event a year.
Would like for spring and fall to last longer.
Would like to live closer to family.

No traffic jams. After living in paradise (Honolulu) for six years, but HATING traffic on H-1, you learn to appreciate having no traffic any time of day.

vote-for2vote-against

I'm a bit late to the party but I'll offer up my take on my current location (Syracuse, NY)

I love the people. We have great neighbors and some really great friends, too.
I love the traffic, in that there isn't any. The roads are overbuilt in terms of capacity so we never encounter stop-and-go, even at the peak of "rush hour".
Love the clean air and clean water.
Love the variety of weather.

Don't care for the fact that complaining and exaggerating about the weather is the top pastime for the area.
Don't care for the shrinking population, which of course takes opportunity away with it.
Don't care for the fact that of the 7 winters we've been through here, 6 of them were warmer and drier than average.

Really, really, dislike the way people drive here. Drivers here on average are dramatically worse than in Orlando FL. Almost every day someone manages to flip their car in this town. A good week is one where nobody nearly kills me by not knowing their how to drive.
