Does anyone have experience with iPod screen repair?
My son dropped his iPod Touch 4th gen (bought right here on woot, sans warranty) and the screen is shattered. It still works, amazingly. I have seen videos showing how to replace the screen yourself but I am not that handy and would prefer to have a professional do it. I found one place locally that wants $89 which seems awful high.
I see that there are companies where you ship it to them and they fix it then send it back, so does anyone have experience with them that they can share, and give me an idea if it's worth the cost savings to go that route?

Watch the video, attempt only do it if you feel confident you can do it.
I have not replaced a screen on an apple product but.
I am watching this, here is my advice:
When separating be careful to not stick you pry blade in too far.
The cables are easy to rip. He mentions it at 5:40.
He mentions a 2nd tricky part at 6:05.
At 9:35 he suggest you should buy new glue. (not sure what kind).
It will take you 6x as long as the video.
It sounds like you will not get the digitizer right the first time so test it before you put it back together.
Watch a few other videos and listen to all warnings. Some of the people that do this stuff do it so much they forget to warn you about all the little things.
Good Luck and take your time!
I had a customer bring their ipod touch screen in for repair and it was a nightmare. Fortunately I found a company called DigiExpress. Their website is digiexpress.com and for about $100.00 they can get you back up and running.
Have you considered to have a tech-savy friend take a look at it? It seems like everyone knows a "computer guy" and if you ask yours they may be able to do it for free, cheap, or refer you to one of their friends. It's just another option to think about if you don't want to do it yourself and don't want to pay a pro.
ETA: Make sure you either trust this tech-savy friend or are willing to accept they might not be able to fix it and might make the situation worse. It just might be worth asking around to see if anyone has tried replacing an ipod screen before.
First off I will say that I am a tech savvy person. I replaced the screen on an iPhone 3GS and it went beautifully! The replacement screen was also really cheap on Amazon. Around $10!
iPod touch 4th gens are trickier, and I know this because I have done it also. The replacement screens are more expensive because the LCD comes fused to the screen/digitizer. The one I bought was around $35. The replacement is a big pain because the connections are harder to get to than in the phone I fixed. They are quite difficult to reach. Even after I got the screen replaced successfully I found that it was extremely difficult to get the screen seated back in the device properly. On an iPhone there are screws that pin the screen down in the case, but the screen in an iPod touch 4th gen is held in solely with adhesive. In the video I was using they actually used clamps and put it in a heating device to get the adhesive to set properly. I personally would not tackle this fix again.
@kristiwsu: Actually, in my circle I AM that techie guy. Unfortuantely due to a medical condition I do not trust my hands with the delicate precision needed for something like this, nor would I want to try talking someone with more steady hands through it. But thanks for the reply.
