What's with the Bacon Fixation on Woot?
So I was just wondering how this got started? Coincidence, inside joke....

It isn't just Woot. It's a geek thing. I have friends in WI that were speechless with joy over bacon salt presents last summer. Personally, I can have it once or twice a year, and then I don't even want to smell it. New Year's Day, the traditional meal, at least in the south, is black-eyed peas and fatback, so I'm good for at least another six months, or more.
Bacon has two of the things that humans naturally crave; salt and fat. Not kidding, btw. We prefer things high in fat to things high in sugar, and we are also drawn to things high in sodium. Makes sense, really, considering how close we are to caveman days.
Anyway, that bacon thing has been around AT LEAST for the past fifteen years (I just checked some old email, and we were talking about it), so I guess it's not going anywhere. Besides, it's funny.
Hmm...interesting, though I think I just lost some geek cred for not knowing that, being a applications developer and all :(
Me and another wooter were talking a while ago about how the bacon salt was kosher. Not really though, much to my dismay. Bacon bits are kosher, Hooray!
@shrdlu: Try giving them spam with bacon this year...I actually exported tinned meat this year (with joyful responses from overseas spammers).
@hessbri: I am an official old fart. I have actually programmed by wire. Look it up, you'll be confused and pitying. Never mind, that's very difficult to Google (I just tried). Here's something annoying (but it has a couple of good lines in the presentation).

I used to write machine code, which is not to be confused with assembler. Now I just mess with the dark sides of social networking, and entertain myself by posting deals on Fortinet appliances (you just NEVER know what will go to Popular).
@glindagw: Spam with bacon actually made Popular last week. I used to work with a bunch of people who were raised in Hawaii, where it's actually a favorite food. I just don't ever get hungry enough to willingly eat it, myself.
@shrdlu: It smells funny!
@shrdlu: ewwwwww, machine code :(
Yeah I had a "lovely" class on that back in College, 8 bit RISC processer written in pure machine code...nasty, glad I had a junior in that class to help our our project team!!
@glindagw: Not to me, it's not funny. It makes me gag, and I am pretty tough about things (I've dealt with two week dead calves, just for starters). Spoiled meat with spices, mmmmmmmm... Spoiled Putrid Awful Meat.
@hessbri: Machine code or assembler? That sounds like assembler. I like assemblers. Unbelievable. That danged Wikipedia just has everything.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COMPASS
That was my favorite. I loved the Cyber series. Crays too. Computers good.
Which RISC processor?
@shrdlu: my eyes have glazed over
@shrdlu: You are correct it was assembly code! I remember one of the test was making sure the processor could handle the division by zero error correctly using "mul". Not sure about the specific RISC architecture. We left that to the junior :) I was a hard core code monkey at that point and didn't much care about the other stuff, bad call in hindsight LOL!
Maybe it started with the Bacon Salt, jokes in the forums, and the Bacon Bits t-shirt. And grew, because everyone likes bacon!
@hobbit: Careful. If your eyes glazed over last time, this will just make you unconscious.
@hessbri: Sounds like either Intel or the old Powerpc stuff from IBM, then. No worries, though. It's a common mistake, esp from younger folk, thinking that assembler is machine code. You could actually program patches into the OS on the Cyber series, using machine code.
@shrdlu: What is "assembler"?
@sgoman5674: Are you being funny, or picking on the fact that I called it assembler, rather than assembly language? Remember, I was around when Grace Hopper created the first "Compiler" and long ago forgave her for COBOL. She was truly an amazing human being.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper
I miss Seymour Cray, too.
Just in case the question was serious:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_language
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_code
@sgoman5674: Well, then, I'm glad I posted the wikipedia links. I have been "corrected" so many times over the years for calling assembly, assembler, that I suppose I just expected that you were gently hinting that I'd misused the term.
Sorry about putting you to sleep...
@sgoman5674: It is like the first ever computer language I think. They used it back in the dark ages when Charles Babbage made his computer. Look that one up.
@shrdlu: Thanks for the interesting tangent! (seriously)
Now then, back to bacon.
It seems to me at least, that as vegetarians and 'vegans' have grown in popularity and in number, the popularity of 'bacon' has also grown; almost seemingly as a retaliatory action. After all, you can't get more un-vegan than eating a big pile of bacon, right?
Those most proud of their carnivorous appetite tend to refer to bacon as the 'Candy of meat'.. I even have to admit that writing this is making my mouth water.
So what do you all think? Is the increased popularity of bacon related to the increased popularity of vegetarianism in such a way -- or am I wrong?
Bacon flavored anything is very funny, however, I have friends myself who are totally addicted to this stuff. I have no answer to this question, other than people LOVE bacon! :)
Spam is an art form in its various creations. We former and current military types believe it is one of the best sources of protein. It can be cooked in many ways and is never boring. The can it comes in has many uses. Do not diss the spam...
@sand4me: spam is disgusting. We of the generation who had parents who cooked it too often and badly hate it. I will never eat spam again.
actually I eat very little pork. Bacon is the only pork product I eat and I don't think twice about. My friends call me on it all the time, because I will make a huge deal about not eating ham, I don't like ham - so I do the whole I don't eat pork speech forgetting that I do eat bacon.
@shrdlu: I meant funny as in curious; strange; peculiar; odd. Disgusting works as well.
@glindagw: Seriously now - do not diss the Spam. Chopped in small pieces, sauted with onions, served with fresh garden tomato bits, cracked pepper - just yummy!
@russchott: Wrong - check out the commentary from Burning Man - lots of bacon stories. No correlation with vegan behavior IMO.
On a related note... is anyone else bothered by the emerging idea of a canon of official geekly interests? I've been called a curmudgeon for this kind of outlook before, but isn't being a geek supposed to be more defined by technical interests/aptitude superseding this kind of drive for conformity? Being a geek shouldn't be about what "meme" you go around typing/shouting (or, hopefully, neither), what foods you purport to crave, or what merchants (th!nkg**k.com, I'm looking in your direction) you might frequent.
Manifesting a bacon fixation is just the Fensler-Films/Cowbell/Lolcat of the present time.
I'm going back to my cave now.
Ohhhhhh.....bacon. Bacon bacon bacon bacon.
Everyone knows real geeks are guys.
All guys are dogs...whether they want to admit it or not.
All dogs love bacon....
Bacon bacon bacon bacon bacon!
give it to me fresh and brittle like black from the skillet, fill my house with the smoke and make me pull the fire-horn from the kitchen till I can air it out, give it to me burnt and I wont complain. oh and I'm Jewish (shu don't tell anyone)...mmmmmmm Bacon!
I propose we officially end the bacon meme. Let's stop beating the dead pig. Yes, everyone loves bacon, but enough is enough.
@domurat: Wait. Isn't "domurat" Algonquin for bacon? Algonquin Indians invented bacon, you know. Before that, there was only spam.
This is why I like bacon... I don't like to eat it, but I like it just because of this link.
but I like Bacon. It is my favorite breakfast treat.
@edterrific: officially the best answer to the my question LMAO!
@shrdlu: well you're partially correct, "domurat" is Algonquin for "pork fat". Let's not forget all pig parts. "shrdlu" means "spam", right? :)
@domurat: No way does "shrdlu" mean spam. It means "ancient" (sometimes it also means cranky). Spam is pig parts? Oh, yeah. Spiced pork stuffs. The spice is to cover the spoiled bits.
You are pretty funny for a bacon slice, I have to admit.
You should repost that game. Didn't you post something that played on Linux during the beta test? Bigger audience for it now. Of course, there wasn't any bacon in it (that I could recall).
@domurat: Scratch posting that game. I just checked, and the game link is still there, but the actual site seems to be toast. Too bad.
@shrdlu: Machinarium? It's a great flash game. What's the etiquette for re-posting deals? Since it was beta, maybe it's grandfathered? It's still a bargain @ $20!
The link is still working for me!
@domurat: The link works, yes, but the VENDOR page is gone gone gone.
I was at my dad's last weekend and he has a round iron thing to flatten the bacon as it cooks. I am appalled by this, flat bacon just seems wrong. I think it forces more fat out of the final product. And I don't mean that in a good way.
@restlessmouse: You know, there was a deal for one of these back during the Beta Test. Maybe I can find it.
Yep, here it is:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/6aa8727e-d7dd-4cec-aa1f-b465f5d52333/bacon-press
Ah, Woot Deals, sometimes you just make me HAPPY!
@adixon115: funniest thing I've seen all year
check this out http://thisiswhyyourefat.com/
@elraphbo: I love that blog. It's one I follow in googlereader.
Sad thing is, I've eaten some of those things since I've lived in the UK (fried Mars bar -- had to stop after 2 bites... way too rich) and Hawai'i (loco moco).
bacon is yummy. it's good in all forms except with chocolate. I want to get my hands on some baconnaise.
@domurat: I agree. I wonder if anyone is even buying these weird items. No offense if they are but I often suspect that these aren't even real products. Maybe we need a bacon.woot site so these aren't constantly showing up here.
Mongo like bacon!
Machinarium? Here's the vendor: http://machinarium.net/demo/
