How was your reputation affected by the leaderboard changes?
Today we rolled out some changes to reputation calculations. The changes are designed to solve two issues we've noticed since rolling out v2 of the reputation system 8 months ago.
1) New users had it way to easy.
We designed a system that wouldn't let long time users have inflated reputations just because they've been around a long time. They need to continue to contribute to be a valuable member of the community and new members should have an opportunity to compete alongside. On the flip side, we made it too easy for a member who joined our community a few hours ago reach the 96th percentile of reputation. This change should help strike a healthier balance.
2) It should be increasingly difficult to level up.
You'll notice on the popular deals page that not everyone has a purple or black triangle next to their username. Soon, you'll notice a visualization in the sidebar that illustrates how the colored triangles are distributed.
How was your reputation affected by the change?
Mine didn't change much. I don't suspect that there will be much change for the usual crowd. I'm still in the top 15, and still over 99%
I'm glad to hear that the new guys will have to work harder to get in, and that we have to work harder to keep on top.
That's the way it should've been all along
It went down by about 14 points. I don't care what color the triangle is, and if I have to contribute daily, I will never have a black triangle (providing I am not terminated from my position or wind up housebound for a prolonged period).
I thought your reward system was good, for those who are posting the best deals and the bestest comments/questions.
I do agree with you that those who are here every day, commenting, questions, tattling, and adding deals deserve some credit for their efforts.
@shawnmiller: I've bounced back and forth so much today that I no longer know what it is. My triangle keeps changing, too. I'd mentioned elsewhere that I hoped you were now weighting questions less than deals. Is that so? I always think that good deals should be the most important, myself.
Yes, I noticed that those who'd nto contributed much over time were penalized, and that the hit-and-run spammer types will now not suddenly appear with purple triangles (and thank you one thousand times for that). I'm interested in the new cutoffs for colors, though. Any chance on your divulging them here?
@ecriscit: Voting up other comments will help you (I think). I had a green one earlier. It's a particularly nice shade of green, and I'm wearing a very pale moss green ensemble today, so it goes well with it. Perhaps I'll wear purple tomorrow, just in case. :-}
@ecriscit: wow, I dropped another 24 points by commenting on your question. I should stop and watch my reputation climb.
@shrdlu: never saw you with a purple triangle before :) It's kinda purty.
Well, I've gone from about 99.0x% to 94.8827438191519%, and I notice that the #15 account on the leaderboard has just 97.50%.
edit: I saw something just a little bit ago - while my reputation was this low, but it has worqed itself out now.
edit: It's 87.0946742195818% now.
āŖShot through the heart, and you're too late. You give love a bad name (guitar)......āŖ
Sorry I don't know why I had a Bon Jovi moment :). But coolio, sure my reputation plummeted but I never cared to much about it anyways. Glad it's more current and reasonable.
Two hours ago (the first time I logged in today) I had dropped from 100 to 97. Now, I'm at 88 with a purple triangle.
Suckage.
On the other hand, if it stops the "post two spammy deals and get an instant rep of 87" stuff, it's definitely a change for the better.
I went from 100 to 67. I guess I'll have to get up off my lazy bum and start posting more deals.
Mine says two different things one up top and I noticed on my comments it's much lower. I went from like 89 to some embarrassing number.
I am happy that @wootbot's rep dropped way down. Spammers like that shouldn't be able to get a high rep.
Well on the bright side, green is my favorite color!
@josefresno: The site's been telling him day after day to ask better questions, but would @wootbot listen? Noooooo...
@josefresno: Careful what you say!!! Girlwootbot will be all over that comment about Wootbot... She must nag the poor guy half to death for him to work so hard day and night...
It looks like I missed much of the roller coaster ride today but did witness a drop into the high 80s and a rebound back into the upper 90s as well as triangles changing colors as pages refreshed and comments posted... Slight head ache from the wild ride but my stomach is Ok...
I had been feeling really good this past week that I finally had a black triangle for more than a few hours at a time. Now I've dropped something like 23%. Fine, I guess; I rarely ask questions and don't post deals all that often, but I do try to vote and comment a lot.
In all, a bit disappointing, but it's not going to ruin my day.
Edit: posting this was apparently worth 12%. Nice.
Fell from 91% to 34%. It is what it is.
I was at 100% earlier today, but I've now dropped to 96.48% after no activity for a couple of hours.
@duckcake: It's actually "Shot through the heart, and you're to blame. You give love a bad name.". Just sayin'.
Hey I'm purple!
meh.... no biggie.
Glad to see an overhaul on the rep system (it was long overdue)
edit (now I'm black again... make up your mind woot!)
This is becoming a great way to fill in time while waiting for a BOC to show up across the aisle.
An hour ago I was 87 and purple; now I'm 95 and black again. I can hardly wait to check it again in another hour or so.
@armagedon: Too bad about that green, kid. You're purple again.
92 to 43 in the blink of an algorithm...well color me worthless. sigh I really liked being purple. Here I am a mousy brown...it clashes with my new hair color. :-(
It all seems pretty pointless to me. I wasn't doing anything to try to game my reputation, and it went down something like 40 points. Whatever.
My rep went from 41 to 11. I'm not too concerned about having a high reputation since I'm fairly new and generally only comment when I feel I have something valuable to add. BUT will this lower reputation make me seem sketchy?
@mukimuki: I think you're pretty sketchy. I don't like it, I don't like it one bit.
@jsimsace: Ahh, so I have a bad memory/hearing. Thanks. :)
This whole reputation thing looks like the stock market 1-2 months ago!
Let's do away with the reputations and let everyone pick what color they want to be. I want to be green.
My triangle turns to GREEN, what does it mean?
And who can tell me what does it mean for each color?
My triangle is still black but my rep dropped from 99 (99.3ish) to 91%.
I feel I've been a relatively active member in terms of commenting, answering, tattling and voting, and I've posted nine deals in the last two months (which I'll grant isn't a whole lot). (My first deal was deleted about three months ago for no reason that I could see, though I didn't ask about it.) About all I don't do is ask questions.
But... given that I'm a relative n00b, I have no problem with my rep dropping as it did (I sort of presumed it was a logarithmic scale since I'd gotten to 99 so quickly).
I went down a few percent but still have a black triangle
Mine went down a bit, but I guess it's to be expected. Haven't had the time to be as active as I used to be. Went down a bit more than I expected it would have, but judging by the previous posts in the related threads, I suspect I'll bounce back somewhat.
@duckcake: Sorry if I came off as being a grammar/lyric policeman..far from it. Also, true 'dat about the rep thing... glad I gave up on the stock market several years ago. :>)
@jsimsace: Oh not at all, you didn't come off as being a grammar/lyric policeman or offensive at all. I'm actually grateful that you cleared that up for me. Makes me not look like an idiot when I sing it in the future. Thank you again. :)
If this is anything like a "market correction" we're all screwed.
@magic cave: Haha, oh darn.
Correction: now I'm purple.
Colorwise, I actually like it (slightly) more than black. As colors apparently have no real meaning at present, purple is thus better than black. Or not. Does it matter?
I am still being told to ask the dreaded questions.
Total weirdness. I just logged out and back in again. My triangle at the top of the page next to my user name is purple (as would befit my 96.2) but my comment triangle looks black.
I am so confused.
My % hasn't been this low in a long time, but I am still above the 50 mark. Is that good; nope, it's baaaad.
In the sidebar on the homepage we added a new house advertisement called "That Little Triangle".
It shows a breakdown of the colors and how many members have achieved each level.
Here's a screenshot: http://grab.by/aT7M
This is not a recent change, but I wanted to point out that activity on deals (adding/commenting/voting) affects your reputation more than activity on questions (asking/answering/voting).
I guess all the see-sawing is done. My reputation only dropped about a point, and I've been floating high recently anyway, so 98% feels more natural to me. But I used to be ranked closer to 100 than to 1 with this rep, so it's good. I got a taste of 100% with the old system. I guess I'll see if I can get it back now that it actually means something.
He's pretty busy these days but maybe @snapster might drop in to explain the "double rubberband" math he came up with. We're currently trying it out to help us achieve the "it should be increasingly difficult to level up" goal.
Also, I should give props to @tallerik and @josefresno who did the programming.
@squirtle456: RE: My triangle at the top of the page isn't the same as the triangle on the leaderboard...
That's a bug. We'll get it fixed.
http://deals.woot.com/questions/users/tallerik/answered shows http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/b8b79254-fcd7-4696-9e77-63e5ed4a0ce8/any-acutal-chinese-food, which was asked by mattschuette, but http://deals.woot.com/questions/users/mattschuette shows nothing, and the question 404's for me.
@chris12345: Sorry about that. Looks like some questions from one of our test servers found their way over here. We'll get that cleaned up.
It seems that on the main woot.com page at the top next to my username, the old algorithm is still used. It still shows 90/100 for me there.
mine dropped from a 100 to a 96. :'[
I haven't been around as much lately, so I didn't even notice it.. (that and to be honest, I really never check the leaderboard heh)
My rep dropped to 95.71 - I know it hasn't been below 99 in months. And the occasions I check the leaderboard I'm usually pretty high - now I'm a 56.
The drop is also contributed to by the lack of contribution/participation lately.
The algorithm doesn't like to be ignored.
I went from an 84 to a 95. I can live with that.
