Do you ever start to make a comment or answer a question, only to stop, say "screw it" and cancel?
I feel I do this all the time, and wonder if other people feel this way...
So if you do this, what's the reason?
Is it fear of the down-vote? Or you just don't feel it's worthy of the woot site?
My reason is the latter.

I do this a lot as well. My reasoning is somebody already brought up my point and I don't have much more to add other than an up-vote.
I second guess myself sometimes, afraid to appear dumb...
Much more often than anyone knows. Which is probably for the better, since they're usually the snarky comments that I redact.
Sometimes it's because I feel like I am not articulating my point. Sometimes I feel like, on the re-read, it's irrelevant. Occasionally I decide it's too political and I don't want to hijack the OP's thread.
Only when the comment is extremely rude. I try to keep neutral on most topics and express only my personal opinions. I do my best to exclude my arguments against someone else.
Sometimes though, there are people that deserve to be flogged and thus I put up very harsh comments in response to their idiotic posts. 90% of the time, I delete them without ever actually posting them
yes. Usually because I realize it's a just lost cause. NEVER for fear of a downvote.
+1 on "some people deserve to be flogged"
All. The. Time.
I write out the comment and then read it and think to myself what kind of response I'm going to get. If I think people are going to take it the wrong way or going to look at me like I have three heads, I'll cancel and let it go.
Quite often. As a matter of fact, I've done it on this question 4 times before finally settling on this one.
we should have a "say what you really think" day here on woot.
Everyone post their unabridged opinions.
Any time I re-read it and can just hear the snarky tone - those get deleted.
@kamikazeken: I believe @shrdlu thinks that's every day.
It might be fun until people told me what they really thought.
yes... if I feel before I hit submit that it might be taken the wrong way I hit cancel or delete he text and try again
@capguncowboy: Aha! I see what you did there :P
sometimes in my hurry to answer or comment, I do so before reading more and find that someone else has made my point. Then I try to get rid of it or amend it in such a way that I do not looke like a complete idiot.
This happens to me all the time.. I'll be typing something out, and realize people aren't going to care so I just
Consider yourself lucky... I actually finished this one!
Downvotes? Oops, I just like to talk or ask questions. Guess I'm doing this wrong... I do cancel a lot. Usually because I forgot the original question.
Yes, because sometimes it's late at night when I have insomnia and I realize I have no point. Sometimes that happens during the day too.
all the... eh heck with it
Yeah, usually because someone's said it better first. :)
yep and many times Woot does it for me by not posting my reply
@capguncowboy: Are you trying to put words in my mouth, or thoughts in my mind?
Truthfully, I often edit what I've just said, over and over and over. Sometimes, after I look at it, I delete it. I try not to post before coffee, since I can surprise even myself with my comments. I've had plenty of them edited by @thunderthighs, and every one of them needed to be.
I'll be typing up something that's going to run to two or three comments, post the first one, and realize someone else has already made the point. I'll delete mine, or change it. Sometimes the stupid light boxes will "delete" it for me, and I just won't bother retyping it.
[Edit: I doubt strongly that it would be good for people to post precisely what they thought. Even if it was just one day. Sometimes things are best left unsaid.]
Just happened! Almost made a comment and hit cancel, didn't care for the comment I was about to make. Just thought I'd share
I wasn't going to answer this, but...what the hey. Yeah, I do it all the time.
Only about 95% of the time.
So if you think what I post is bad, just be grateful you can't see what I rejected.
This is my 5th attempt to answer this question.
I have deleted many, many times. I have a rather sarcastic sense of humor and realize that it can cut deeply and/or be misunderstood by those w/o the capacity to laugh. :-p
@shrdlu: We still love you... as much as one could love a stranger
Every day! My normal instinct is to be a complete jerk to everyone I come in contact with. I have written long responses to all sorts of things and thought, "all this is going to accomplish is starting an argument over something I don't really care about and will end up making me really stressed and angry" Then I click cancel and go about my day. This is after submitting several of these jerk responses that did end up ruining my day over something really stupid and inconsequential.
This is exactly why I like being able to up and down vote comments and deals. I often read something that I disagree with but want to avoid an argument that will surely stress me out (and ultimately accomplish nothing). The ability to downvote that comment or whatever allows me to express my opinion (somewhat) without the resulting argument.
I usually complete answers that I begin, unless I realize my reply is too far off point or redundant.
However, I abandon more answers I begin, due to a quirk of Deals.Woot and the fact I am posting from a laptop.
What quirk makes me abandon posts?
If you ever click outside the message box it immediately closes with a loss of your work. Since I use a laptop with a very sensitive, capacitance touch pad, I have inadvertently had this happen. After typing a long post, it can be annoying to spend time recreating the thought & links.
I've learned to draft my messages in a text editor and paste my completed answer into the message box. Usually. I still get carried away at times and just start a reply without thinking about the risks.
But once it happens, once the box closes without submitting, 7 times out of 10 I just leave the thought unsaid.
All the time.
All the time. In fact I almost cancelled this on because a lot of people wronte "All the time"
Yeah, I... never mind.
Yeah, sometimes I'll write "
Ah, screw it.
I hate when i write a full commment, then i accidenlty click outside the box and it disappears! then i think, do i need to rewrite it?
@thumperchick: I cancel when my comments aren't snarky enough.
try to make comment either funny, informative or "quality post" worthy.
never acheived a quality post.
had a few yuk-yuk posts.
I often babble and go off on tangents that are bizarre.
(hiring woot writers? woot? )
and sometimes i get deleted when i want to tell the truth
which really chaps my hide.
@bnbsouthworth: Yep. I hate to have other people negatively jump on my comment, so I've scrapped quite a few. - probably should have scrapped this one, too.
In recent years I've gotten better at self-filtering some of my utter stupidity. Key word: some
I do it often. Usually, I'll have a thought or two in mind that I want to state, but in the process of writing it out, I realize that it/they really aren't funny, could probably offend some people, won't be really worthy of anyone's notice.
I've done it a few times. It's usually when I go on and on about something. I'll even finish the comment, but then I'll look at what I typed and think "Who the heck needs or wants to know all that?" so I just close the pop-up.
I just did that like twice today and wrote like at least half a paragraph already.
Ah shoot guys, I was going to answer this question 8 hours ago, but then I said screw it it's not worth my time. Oh well.
Many times.
Usually the reason is that I am simply too tired to express myself coherently, but other times it is due to excess snark, insufficient humor, or being unwilling to do the research needed for something more than a mere opinion.
All the friggin..
Frequently and often. Usually either because I don't think I'd be adding that much to the discussion, or because coming up with a comment that conveys the meaning I want is sometimes more trouble than it's worth.
I mean, it's not like comments on a discussion board are all that important anyway, so unless the words are flowing, it's probably better to spend the energy petting a cat instead of they keyboard.
Only when there are 48 answers in front of mine...
Yep. For most of the above reasons. No fear of a down vote, though.
