I've owned a couple of inCase iphone case + battery packs and generally enjoyed that product, though they discontinued it due to reception issues and I've moved on to Mophie. I've not had a lot of luck deal-hunting in the category myself and it's one of the few categories I sort of perversely enjoy walking into an apple store to pay full retail for. I would push a perspective that inCase products are likely to be much higher engineering quality and a fair bit better build quality than a no-name generic.

a good challenge though since there are undoubtedly many variations from different makers to consider. (I've used only separate devices to achieve AC/DC charging)

Geeks.com has a unit with more attachment pieces to arrive at this combo functionality but also has a built in lithium battery for portable charging:

on the recommendation of @snapster I'm just going to suck it up and buy the name brand one. My local Apple Store didn't carry it, so I'm ordering online.

If anyone else is doing the same, the S&H to me in WI was around $9.39 direct from InCase; their standard shipping was 5-7 days...after processing.

Went over and checked at Apple: free shipping for their 2-3 day delivery. Ummmm, Apple wins again.
