Could it be as simple as farming vs. being a mountain man?

Hillbilly is a lifestyle - redneck is a culture.

If you're a hillbilly it's because of the place you live and the what you do.

A redneck - on the other hand - can be found anywhere. You just have to subscribe to certain views.

Neck color, and hill living status.

I've always seen hillbillies as being more rustic. We'd probably consider the people who first came to this country as hillbillies. More of a cultural/geographical thing, and a little outside the societal norms.

I think a redneck is more of a societal phenomenon. It can be chosen as a style or lifestyle, and is the palatable, mainstream version of white trash.

There's a term with wildland firefighting call the "wildland urban interface", for some reason that reminds me of "redneck".

Traditionally, redneck was a term given to a usually a caucasian blue collar or rural worker who labored outdoors, thus the sunburned or red neck. These individuals were often lacking in higher education as well.

Watch the movie Deliverance, them be Hillbillies...

I consider myself a proud Hillbilly Redneck (yet I have a couple of graduate degrees). I'm pretty sure guns and country music are required parts of the mix.

@nortonsark: A Hillbilly Redneck in Redmond? I bet your accent gets looks sometimes.

Edited to add: You forgot drinkin'.

You're a redneck if you love your cousins as much as I do mine!

Good question for Jeff Foxworthy

@kmeltzer: My ancestors and some current relatives are hillbillies. No rednecks on the family tree.

A redneck usually has a few more teeth than a hillbilly.

@julius You're a redneck if you love your cousins as much as I do mine!

Does that mean your a hillbilly if you love your sister more?

One drinks Coors the other drinks Coors light

vote-for5vote-against

@bigfrank: Neither drink Coors. Rednecks drink beer, hillbilly's drink moonshine. Rednecks wear jeans, hillbillys wear overalls. Rednecks drive new Ford F150 Pickups, hillbillys drive 1954 ford pickups. Rednecks live on a farm on the outskirts of towns, hillbillys live on a farm 4 miles from a road. Rednecks hunt for fun, hillbillys hunt to eat. Rednecks argue and fight it out, man to man. Hillbilly's grandkids will wait 40 years to get even with the redneck's grandkids. (I have kids in Georgia and North Carolina)

If your bar tab exceeds the mortgage payment on your trailer...

You might be a redneck!

@susan11125: If he wrote Hillbilly jokes...

If a G-man has ever busted open one of your best moonshine stills with your great grandaddy's banjo...

You might be a Hillbilly!

redneck is actually a slur against working-class people. It refers to their working outdoors and getting a sunburned neck.

Randy Newman hasn't written a song about hillbillies yet.

A hiilbilly has no teeth while a redneck flosses the ones he wants to keep.
