Ok, where's that shotgun? I just had it here a moment ago.....oh wait! I buried it withthe body of the telemarketer who kept calling me during dinner! Damn, I wish I kept it around for spammers.

@sgoman5674: I have a really nice 9mm. I'm thinking hunting season on spammers is always open. Yes, I have bags of lye.

Oops, I just made another thread on this very topic, and spammer...shoulda checked the forum first.

The firehose nature of the fresh tab is such that the more active the site becomes, the less useful the first 15 deals of the fresh tab become. Limiting the amount of deals a new user can post will just cause the spammers to find a different work around... It quickly becomes a game of whack-a-mole. It might make more sense to look at different ways for users to view and vote for fresh deals. The challenge is coming up with ways of filtering out the noise and encouraging users to submit deals and vote on them without further complicating the user experience. So, until we come up with something better; tattling on spammers will help the moderators know which deals should be removed.

@josefresno: I still think that removing new accounts/accounts with no voting status from being able to post deals would fix a decent percentage. At least it would make me happy. How could that be bad? Yes on the whackamole characteristic, but you've got to start with something.

Oh, and not first 15. That guy posted 25 deals in about two minutes. Twenty. Five. I hate him.

I think he did this before from another account, too. Maybe you should just block the entire site from being posted as a deal. Gah.

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: If it is the same guy, maybe woot should block the IP (or a range of IPs) from posting.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I wonder if the activity will naturally slow down a bit after a few weeks. If I understand correctly, about 2,000,000 people got an email a couple of days ago saying, "Come check out our site". That's bound to bring out a lot of folks - and a percentage of those folks will be idiots.

So maybe we're in the middle of a temporary surge.

Still, something will have to be done long-term to keep out known spammers.

vote-for4vote-against

I agree about the temporary surge. Woot wannabe, one item deal websites are all over now, and this will slow down after the novelty wears off. I remember staying up for my first woot-off.

vote-for4vote-against

@exseadog: My first woot off I woke up to and had no idea what it was. I called up my friend in Florida who had told me about woot and he told me.

I think we are in the middle of a surge as well. Hopefully it will end soon.

@SecretAgentWoman: Please limit the number of threads about the number of deals posted within a specific time.

vote-for5vote-against

@burtburt: Huh? I already apologized for a duplicate thread and even tattled on myself to get it removed.

vote-for6vote-against

@burtburt: Shoo. Go away. Come back and participate when you have the useful stuff to offer, rather than starting out snarky. I've EARNED my snarky (and I'm going to get more coffee now, before I get to be unpleasant)...

vote-for4vote-against

Agreed. I saw multiple posts of the same deals from the same person.

@mbrugnoni: It's not like he'll be back. At least it's to be hoped.

Shrdlu == cranky

Has anything been done on this? Drugstore.com has joined deals.woot. Their deals seem to be solid, I would just hate to have to weed through a large number of deals from one site. I do appreciate that they have an honest username (no question about who is posting).

vote-for2vote-against

@glindagw: I think you'll need to rephrase this, and ask it again. I hope that they do this, but who can say???

No, nothing's been done. Some of the worst forum spammers seem to have moved on, but it still sucks to see a deal buried because someone else posted ten or twenty at a time (chocol8 or whatever the name is comes to mind).

vote-for2vote-against

@shrdlu: It seems as if it would be to Woot's advantage to push "drugstore" into using the sponsored deals as a forum to list their sales. At least they posted a variety of items (as opposed to the recent glut of speaker stuff). I know that issue is nothing new, it was just such a blatant display of a retailer getting on board.

vote-for2vote-against

@glindagw: I'm sorry. I wasn't at all clear in my previous reply. What I'd meant to say was that my original post needed to be asked again, now that things are settling down. I agree with your points about drugstore.com, by the way (not spam, just too many, and all at once).

Suggesting them as a sponsored deal is brilliant, especially if it's a shipping free to wooters, or 10% off vitamins and supplements, or similar things.

I just get very frustrated when something like that happens, because then everything else posted just before is pushed on to a new page, and I don't think most people look beyond the first page or two in Fresh (if they look at all). With the new aging deadline (which seems to be, if it's not popular in 24 hours, it's outta here), it makes it even more difficult for the one-off deals to show up.
