questionsis anyone else bothered by seeing too many staff…

they hired deal hunter staff just to post deals, so we are going to see more of this. I think the idea is to see the fresh page move faster. @snapster explained it when saw the new staff posting. It would be nice if the deals were spread out a bit more, like over night and on weekends, but we aren't paying the bills.

vote-for5vote-against

@hobbit: True, I really think they should be spread out as well. I also think that staff shouldn't have a rating either. What difference does it make?

vote-for5vote-against

Are less deals being posted because of the woot off? It seems like there are more concentrated staff postings today.

vote-for4vote-against

@claudicina: staff don't actually have a rating beyond the triangle. They don't show up on the leaderboard. I am guessing if it were possible they wouldn't have the triangle either but, really I don't pay much attention to that I pay more attention to how long someone has been a member.

@glindagw: that is possible. Folks are hitting f5 a lot today and probably don't have time to look for deals, unless they are getting paid.

vote-for7vote-against

@glindagw: I'm actually surprised to see people here during a woot-off. This place generally turns into a ghost town for a few days. This is really nice, I don't feel so alone.

The staff postings are far less than during the first few days that the staff schills were doing the postings. It's actually calmed down a lot and I've actually voted for some of their stuff.

vote-for6vote-against

It is more interesting here than over (on woot itself) where there are woot offs. I've seen enough lolcats and semi-nude women to last me for a few years.

In addition, I am bothered less by postings from staff than I am bothered by postings of random items that no one will ever buy. It was funny for a while, but I don't need to see any more million dollar islands (or tanks, either).

vote-for7vote-against

@catbertthegreat: Me too on the voting although I swear my mouse shocked me the first time I voted for one of those deals.

vote-for4vote-against

@cassandratroy: the image free environment of deals is one reason I enjoy it here. Yes we do goof off and post links to things once in a while, but that is rare, even those useless deals have died down some. Although someone will always think they are funny I doubt it will be like it was that one week or two.

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: It seems more intelligent, if that makes any sense. I was glad to read the posts about how to change the avatar. What an ugly idea that was. At least now my avatar is Cassandra of Troy, instead of some horrid misshapen creature. I prefer Woot when it isn't having a woot off.

vote-for6vote-against

@cassandratroy: I agree. It looks like we have an attention span in comparison to the other side.

@catbertthegreat: I'd rather chat with my "friends" over here!

I wish that the staff would branch out a bit. Some of their deals feel like a variation of the sponsored deals.

vote-for4vote-against

@glindagw: Agreed. Especially when they post similar deals within a very small time frame -- it'd be nice if the deals are more spread out so I see more variety on the fresh page instead of mostly deals from the same person (sometimes).

vote-for0vote-against

@claudicina: I am more bothered by seeing you posting a lot of useless crap that aren't deals and nobody would ever want. It would be an overall better situation if you stopped all together. Thank you.

vote-for14vote-against

@twinturbox1: Gee, Mr @iphonestore clone, still carrying the torch for my friend here? Nothing like having a quote from a shill account to really make my day.

For those two people that don't get it, look to see which deals this vacuous zombie voted for.

[Edit] To be crystal clear on this, printed to PDF, and screenshot. You know, it's not a stupid bunch here, Mr iphoney.

vote-for9vote-against

I'm not really bothered by the staff posts. Sure, there are a lot of them that crop up, and I certainly don't always agree with their idea of deals, but it's nice to see the place get a little motion during a woot-off.

I've bought, well... hundreds of Woot! items over the years. But lately, I've noticed that I just don't NEED any more refurbished netbooks, and I already have a legion of Roombas in my Roomba Army. Deals.woot always gives me something a little fresher. Not always as good a deal... but often more interesting.

vote-for9vote-against

@twinturbox1: hey now I like her deals! I vote for them. I feel like a bot saying this, but ONE peron's favorite deals may not be another's. I personally am not turned on by computer junk, I like girlie stuff so who are you to tell someone specifically that they are posting junk deals. She didn't call out anyone her rant was a general one.

vote-for7vote-against

@starfishie: I have to agree with your variety remark. Posting every piece of jewelry or every video cable on sale from a certain site does tend to tie up the fresh page. I like the fact that the fresh page could have a space shuttle, a diamond bracelet, Firefly the complete series, and bacon pop corn all next to each other instead of 10 different DVDs.

vote-for4vote-against

Yeah they bother me. Then again so do a lot of things :)

Unlike most of you, I'll say I'm slowly fading away from this site. (not that you people will miss me anyways right?) :). No reason to go into detail, but after reading every comment from the many posts on this site, and the direction things are heading. "I" don't feel to welcome here anymore.

vote-for6vote-against

I usually don't go beyond the first page of fresh deals so copious posting hurts lazy bums like me. You energetic young 'uns keep voting for the good ones so I can find them on Popular.

vote-for7vote-against

@shrdlu: Have I ever told you how much I <3 you? I should email you the exchange between me and Mr. iPhone store. We emailed about a week ago. Funny, I never got a response to my response... Needless to say, I think you'd appreciate it!

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: Are you referring to me, the man, or shrdlu?

vote-for7vote-against

@claudicina: No need to email it. I could probably reconstruct it without ever seeing the exchange. Just to forestall anyone removing the comment, I printed the thread to PDF, and made a screen shot (and then made the note that I had done so). Please. The fact that someone feels the need to use shill accounts to move a deal to popular...

Oh, well. I suppose they equate it with the fact that I'm very likely to vote on anything @catbertthegreat posts. Oh, wait. That's because I LIKE most of the things he posts.

Feh. Don't get me started.

vote-for7vote-against

The only issue with the staff postings that I have was summed up in the "Ask the wooters" post about loosecannon posting a bunch of deals at once when someone said it is kind of annoying to see that woot will pay people to do the same thing that the community has been doing for free for months (credit to be dulled out when I edit)

Edit:
Posted by @hobbit "...I kind of found it insulting to see jobs posted for deal hunters. You are basically paying folks to do what we have done for months for free, so where is my incentive to keep posting deals..."

in the thread: http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/5633fdc6-6328-46eb-ab13-c4decb64a759/enthusiastic-new-member-loosecannon67?page=3&sort=oldest

I think that comment perfectly sums up my current opinion when the deals flood. If they post every once in a while, that's fine, but don't overwhelm this community, which was founded on unpaid scavengers, with paid deal hunter's deals (whether financially motivated or not)

vote-for5vote-against

@twerp02: the financially motivated part is what scares me the most. Will there be a point in the future that the paid staffers are posting deals that are financially motivated, maybe instead of the deal of the day, woot sells sponsored staffer spots. the staffers come to get respect with the staff tag they carry, and with that respect comes great responsibility.

vote-for4vote-against

@spacemonkey6401 and @glindagw seem to be on the right track regarding these deals as being quasi-sponosred. I responded to this staff posting

http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/5f292c38-a608-4546-b54b-bf144b63da92/lavender-rose-peruvian-lily-bouquet#6

and almost immediately a person from the company replied (see comments section).

The deal (as posted), by the way, was not very forthcoming about shipping fees.

vote-for5vote-against

@twerp02: yes I did say that and I am still not thrilled, but if you also continue reading through that discussion I believe @snapster and @jumbowoot also stated why they hired staff - which is something I stated in my first response. I am resigned to the reality of what woot is doing.

vote-for5vote-against

@wootvan: Thank you for reminding me about my biggest pet peeve with staff deals. The can post "Shipping to Dallas would be XXX." I try to do that with my deals when calculated shipping is involved. It gives us some sense of what our shipping costs might be. They're being paid...do the work! If the shipping is high then it probably isn't a good deal.

vote-for6vote-against

@hobbit: It's all good. No harm done! lol

vote-for4vote-against

@claudicina: it is all that Roman History I read you know. Claudicina would have been the female dimunitive of Claudius I am sure, so I just assumed and well.

vote-for6vote-against

@claudicina: Wait. You're a GUY?!?! Dammit. That is NOT a guy name. What's up with that?

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: I am SO glad I wasn't the only one. Makes me feel better about my assumptions.

vote-for8vote-against

@hobbit and @shrdlu: I'm with you two on this. I thought he was a she. :)

vote-for9vote-against

@shrdlu: It just goes to show you that you never can tell by the gender by the login. I thought for the longest time that catbert was a female due to the sparkleys he was listing. Now I know better. Sorry, catbertthegreat.

vote-for6vote-against

We're always intrigued when wooters reveal that they are women. It's not often that we mistake a man for a woman. Thanks for clearing that up @claudicina.

vote-for8vote-against

@catbertthegreat and @claudicina are guys? This is deals.woot's version of The Crying Game!

vote-for4vote-against

As for the deals staff postings, as long as they post interesting stuff then I'll vote. It doesn't matter much to me the source (except if they are on my nasty people list). I was worried they would do away with the community model and only have staff postings when they initially started.

vote-for6vote-against

@mtrlgrl: Now catbertthegreat has always been open about his guyness. I think in his introduction he said he was a boy. But yes I agree that someone else may have been unmasked to a point which is kind of funny.

vote-for4vote-against

@reemus: and me too. Have to laugh at this. I think it was @catbertthegreat who always read my screen name as "Lava King" in his head. :)

vote-for4vote-against

@mtrlgrl: It's funny how our minds work. I ALWAYS read your name as "Mighty Girl," instead of "Material Girl." Edit: unless it's NOT an abbreviation for "material girl" and then I'm gonna feel REALLY stupid!

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: I think that's how I always used to read your name as well.

vote-for8vote-against

I'm with @mtrlgrl, I don't care if a deal comes from staff. If I like the deal, I'll vote for it no matter who posts it. I do agree with some of the other discussion that perhaps they should be held to a higher standard of post completion than the average user that woot HQ can't control.

I can also see where @duckcake is coming from. There's a lot of sour behavior growing in the community, and it's feeling unwelcoming. People are going to ask dumb questions that other members who've been around the block or read the FAQ could answer, but belittling others shouldn't be a goal. It's quite sad.

vote-for7vote-against

@lavikinga: It was lava king for a while. Your's has confused me the most when I'm typing.

Folks don't fret if you confuse me for a girl. People confuse me as a girl all the time on the phone so, it is no biggie.

@claudicina: You are a guy? Wow, I'm thinking we need to start a gender ID thread, but that would probably be immediately bogged down with so many answers, it would probably be difficult to read.

@mtrgrl: There has always been this FAQ: http://sites.google.com/site/catbertthegreat/
That I'd hoped woot! staff might transpose elements into the main site FAQ one day.

vote-for6vote-against

@perkalicious11: The sour behavior could be resolved if there were a "block" button next to users' names. Then we wouldn't have to see it.

clarification: more like an "ignore" button or "mute".

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: wait her name is material girl? I thought it was motorgirl! well that is how I remember how to spell it anyway.

vote-for5vote-against

@claudicina: What region of Italy? My family is from around Bari, we still have cousins there in the region. No I haven't been for a visit.

vote-for7vote-against

@claudicina: No you don't sound like a girl. I have forgotten most of what was said in the intro thread, so I go on screen names.

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: See.... I always read your name as some permutation of LA Viking. I pictured this armoured, 6' blonde with a 3' spear.
