Volumes can and have been written to answer that question. In its purest form, I think love is how we got here, why we are here and where (if we don't screw up too badly) we are going. It is all that matters.

Depends on what kind of love you're talking about. The Greeks had it all figured out and had four words for it.
1. Éros (ἔρως): a deep passion, with sensual desire and longing.
2. Philia (φιλία): friendship or affectionation in modern Greek. It is a dispassionate virtuous love, a concept developed by Aristotle.
3. Storge (στοργή): "affection" in ancient and modern Greek. It is natural affection, like that felt by parents for offspring.
4. Agápe (ἀγάπη): unconditional love. In Ancient Greek, it often refers to a general affection or deeper sense of "true love" rather than the attraction suggested by "eros".
The greatest of these is agape love :)
