questionshow did you first learn about woot!?

I think I first saw mention of the woot on the fidonet echomail in the early 90's.

I may have attempted the "I want one" a few times, but the mail didn't bounce back fast enough and I lost so many deals.

And of course I got a bunch of "mee too" messages tagged along.

Tagline: Blond Klingons, because it was a good day to dye.

@jsimsace and @lumpthar

Those questions were 3 and 8 months ago. It seemed a nice time to ask the question with a woot! off going on. If the mods feel it's been asked too many times, then I guess they can make the choice the pull the question.

Some guy my wife worked with told me about this crazy site where you bought some slippers and you'd get some slippers along with some random electronics or other stuff.

A lady who runs the science labs at my old college wore Woot! shirts a lot, as did one of her friends. They wound up showing me A Simple Question of Weight Ratios because they knew I loved Monty Python and I just had to have it, so I joined Woot! that day.

@mkentosh: So how often do you think a question needs to be asked? Does this mindset apply to all questions on the ATC side, or just ones that meet certain criteria (like receiving several votes when they were previously asked)?

vote-for10vote-against

I don't see that it does any harm to re-ask a question. There are new wooters all the time, so a question asked a few months ago may have an entirely new slant when reasked. I jointed Woot when my adult daughter told me about the hilarious write ups for the products. She was right, they are, indeed, funny and quite entertaining.

I overheard a coworker yelling about getting errors, turns out there was a BOC. Ever since I have been hooked.

I bought 2 Polaroid DVD Recorders w/ a 160GB hard drive at a yard sale a few years ago. The woman there said her son bought them from a site called "Woot". The boxes still had the shipping label on them so I looked up the site. I've been checking in almost every day since then! ;->

A long distance friend of mine sent me an email about 2 years ago asking me if I "woot!", so of course I had to goggle it. Then I just watched it occasionally until I finally joined in December 2011.

Protip: Only douchebags post up an answer as "duplicate". We have mods for a reason.

Back to the question at hand: Found a story about it on Consumerist, and decided to check it out. Been hooked since.

Hm, that would be the 05-06 era so I'm gonna just go with coworkers. I don't even remember. All I do remember was placing my very first order and being delighted. Been one of those off and on affairs since (currently on, of course) mostly depending on shopping need and budget. :)

As for the duplicate questions, usually things that are a couple months old or so are pretty fair game. As someone else noted, folks cycle through.

Please note that is not blatant permission to go reputation grinding by digging up questions and reposting them because they 'just pass that mark'. (Yep, seen that happen.) Common sense, good judgement, all that. :) Use search, read the old threads, and if it was beaten to death, well. Also figure no matter what you ask someone will probably find an old thread. No need to get worked up, folks.

That said I like this question. It's one of those things that is actually fun to check once in a while for research purposes.

I befriended my (albeit somewhat nerdy) IT guy here at my office a couple of years ago. It has consumed my life ever since. Thanks Doug!

From Spoofee, a deals site. But now that Woot has its own deals site, I'm rarely on Spoofee anymore.

I would have to guess that my Brother-in-law got me hooked on it...I'm not really sure...It was back in '05.
I was graduating high school and buying random stuff -- it seemed like the appropriate place to go! :)

The item that brought me here on December 22nd, 2007: Steelsound 4H Professional Gaming Headset.

I bought one for myself and another as a very late christmas present replacement for a friend (I wasn't going to see him until New Year's day anyway).

Saw the deal posted on the Premium forums @ ESEA, followed the link, made an account, made my first purchase and that was it.

I had a friend point me towards a woot shirt that featured a pirate tripping another pirate who had stilt-like peglegs. When he asked if I had checked out the site I said, "Yeah that shirt was kinda cool." He then let me know that there was a new shirt and new deal every day.

...and the rest is history.

I think I found it with Stumbleupon

Gizmodo.com had a post alerting everyone that a woot-off was taking place... The year was 2007... Life would never be same again.

Some nerds in college let me know about it in late 2004. A little over 3 years later, I was working here! :)

Well, I got an e-mail from Amazon.com (which I guess was the time they bought it back in 2008) and it featured a Dyson vacuum which was the only thing I saw on the frontpage, I didn't really understood how this site worked yet. So I just left the page.

Earlier this year, I got another e-mail from Amazon.com with it saying "Hey, we noticed you looking at surveillance systems on Amazon.com and thought you might be interested in today's Sellout.Woot deal" which was exactly I was looking for on amazon and that ZMODO surveillance system was on sale. So I bought it and then here I am!

What was also interesting was that my dad bought a refurbished Roomba without me knowing roughly a year or two ago from this site. He never told me until the ZMODO came in, lol.

i stumbled across it in a cabbage patch.

I was told about it in college by a stoner friend and thought the idea of a Bag of Crap was ludicrous. I was more recently told about it by a more reputable friend and thought it was a novel idea.

vote-for2vote-against

@jsimsace: right now there are at least 3,4 duplicate questions on the front page. So I guess it is up
to tattlers to tattle and the great mod team to make the final decision

@mkentosh: I sent you a PM over on woot proper.

EDIT: In case you didn't notice, there are no downvotes on your question. :)

vote-for1vote-against

@mkentosh: Thanks for the reply. FWIW I composed my PM then found you to notify you, and saw your previous response. Yes, duplicate questions are semming to be quite common. I'll zip my fingers shut on that issue. :)

I remember, I saw the word Woot and thought "I should register that URL if it is not already taken" It was taken and it was awesome.
