If you haven't bought anything from Woot, then you can't vote on deals or comments.

@rprebel: Before I connected the dots about this I used to wonder if they were worried about their, voting percentage (for attempts to get top voter), and thus would manually remove their 1 automatic vote from their deal that might flop, so to better ensure a higher average. I oggled for a while that people might actually be that maniacal. {looks ever shoulder}

@susan11125: I wasn't sure if you were joking or not, then I looked at your "votes.." You had none. So if you're serious:

First and foremost, you need to have purchased something from one of the Woot sites. Since you've been a member since '08 I'm guessing that's no problem..

After that, just click one of the arrows above or below the number to vote in the respective direction.

I also saw that you HAD voted for some questions, so I know that I'm probably answering a joke. But you know what? I had the free time :)

[ed]I take that back. Your only votes are autovotes for your own q's. Now I'm kind of confused. hmm

@drchops: I'm a bit puzzled myself, truthfully. Susan seems like a nice enough person, but she REALLY needs to read some of the FAQs. She is certainly evidence that there is no good FAQ for Deals. There really isn't. A couple of times we started one, in the early days, and let's just say we found it less than rewarding to do so.

Seriously. Look this over.

Not one thing about how to actually use the site, or interact with it. Not one. Nothing about voting, or reputation, or what actions can bring stunning downvotes to your comments, deals, or questions.

SMiller wrote this before Deals was even out of Beta.

jsjohnson64 is the former account of JW (this may get a Wedit, so you should memorize it).

My favorite comment?

"I too don't understand voting. Perhaps a "How do I participate" entry would be good."

[I'm not through, but I NEED COFFEE.]

Before I forget, since I just found this link again, here's the infamous first discussion about Reputation over on Wooterville.

Yep. Now I really need coffee.

It seems the purpose of voting is to utterly randomize which deals and questions become "popular". Because the reasons why people upvote or downvote things are wildly inconsistent, it pretty much takes the value out of the vote number. I am sure a lot of people are actually voting on whether they think it is a good deal or not, and a lot are voting on whether they like the product. But there are plenty voting on the OP rather than the deal, or voting based on the OP's unrelated past posts, or blanket up or down-voting everything on the popular or new tab. Some people have said that if someone makes a comment or posts a deal that offends them they go to that person's file and downvote everything they ever posted. I used to think that the votes were a good measure of whether I might want to buy something or not, but after watching the voting patterns I disregard them entirely. Which is not to say I don't get a thrill out of having something get upvoted a a lot.

drchops - Not a joke. I'm just trying to figure out how this all works. If I did vote, it wasn't intentional; I probably just pressed the wrong key. Thank you for your response; it was helpful. As shrdlu has pointed out, I need to do more reading before I ask anymore questions. Susan

@susan11125: When you click the "reply" button, and it places an "@" in front of the name, don't edit it off. Many people (including myself) have the email me if someone "mentions" me set, and when you remove the @ from their name, they don't know you've replied to a comment. For example, @drchops will see this comment I am making to you, and revisit the question to see your reply, which he might not know about otherwise.

@shrdlu: That's was an impressively accurate prediction :) lol..

@susan11125: Glad to hear that was of some help.. and like @shrdlu said, there really isn't an FAQ [hat will give you the information you need]; so if you have any questions, ask away. I'd be glad to answer whatever questions I can - and I'm sure there're plenty of other people who'd be more than happy to do the same.

For whatever reason, the people around here tend to be a lot more friendly than your typical message board.. so you shouldn't see any "USE THE SEARCH BUTTON!" responses if you do decide to ask heh..
...And if you do get responses like that, you can downvote 'em :)

Weird. I knew that people who hadn't purchased something from Woot couldn't vote but I didn't realize they could post deals. That seems kind of... odd to me. It seems like if someone can't vote they shouldn't be able to post deals either.
