what is the AMD equivilant of an Intel i5 these days?
I use to be up to date on this stuff but in the last year i am not that up to dat e on processors. What do you think a good mid range processor for a laptop is today?

@omnichad: yeah, makes total sense when you think about it, i guess i just never thought about it :)

@ndcouch: Heat equals wattage, and yeah - that means the faster drain. The cooler a laptop is, the less battery it needs (as a general rule). That could always be influenced by fans and routing of the heat, but overall it's a good rule.

@kainis: i knew they ran hot but didn't know they drained the battery faster. good to know.

@ndcouch is right, you should use Intel in a laptop. AMD runs too hot in laptops and gets horrible battery life.

i use an AMD 6 core in my gaming PC and love it, but from my understanding AMD is only good in desk tops. if you have a laptop you should go intel.

2nd or 3rd gen Core i5 is where it's at in laptops. AMD doesn't really compare right now - the AMD E-series seems to be the only thing I see in a laptop in a store ad, so there must not be much selection in the higher-end AMD anyway.

I am an AMD fanboy from back in the day. I say that to put the following into perspective: I would not get and AMD based notebook system. Intel is just miles ahead right now on power and thermal efficiency: both of those are critical in portable systems.

If you have the choice get an 83XX. They are what the FX series should have been when they came out.

I like using Passmark when comparing CPUs. I feel it is a pretty accurate rating system. According to the ratings, the AMD FX series 6 & 8 core CPUs are hovering around where the i5 CPUs are.
