Does deals.woot have a new troll? Can he be stopped? @ploeg8393
Just noticed this kid posting very "creative" comments on the new deals. I really cant stand trolls, especially ones that arent even trying to be creative... Is there anything that can be done about this?
At least superman75 gets a little creative with his Amazon reviews!
Looks that way. Every post is "Probably the worst #### of all time." Like you said, not even creative. Looks like he's got hundreds of these. Cry for attention? Mislead attempt at thinking comments boost his rating? General douche baggery?
Hmm, I don't know. Maybe he truly has a general hatred of everything. Haters gonna hate!
It's a social experiment. Just ignore him!
@studerc: Tru dat, but how many movies can really be the worst of all time?
weird. he voted up this deal but claims its the worst hard drive of all time http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/baa8d428-9caf-4829-89f9-ae37771593c6/western-digital-elements-2-terabyte-2tb-usb-2-0-3-5-external-hard-drive-refur#1
Probably the worst question of all time.
The only way to kill a troll is to let him starve. Quit feeding the trolls.
Well, I don't know if you'd consider this "feeding" the troll, but his comment was just deleted from the Hook blu-ray... along with a funny comment from one of the squarey-staff, calling him to order.
Awww c'mon, don't feed the troll :)
His comment was just eliminated from one of my deals also
@inkycatz: Yep. But some just have nothing better to do.
Oh, and if you think that's bad, try a troll & a stalker!
http://deals.woot.com/deals/users/internyet/votedagainst - all this entity does is to come to Woot and indiscriminately vote down only my deals. LoL I can't imagine how this person lives with so much...time and malice. :)
It's funny that I would get so much attention from some random idiot online, but at the same time it's also kind of creepy.
@lll0228: Heh, I was just looking at that earlier!
@inkycatz: Thanks! It's really weird and creepy.
Btw, any one wondered why the questioner thought it was a "he"?
@lll0228: Wow that is some dedication! 81 pages!
@lll0228: stupid question: how can you tell who voted for/against your post?
@lll0228: We're all guys on the internets.
Looks like there's a new sheriff (is it you, @inkycatz?) in town. The troll's comments are biting the dust. (And I really think it is a "he".)
@katblue: Naw, I'm not that new. :) I was just recharging mah lazers.
@moosezilla: You can't see how someone votes on comments or answers. But you can see what deals or questions a specific person voted up/down or commented on by clicking their username here in d.w.
@inkycatz Lol, I wasnt really trying to feed the troll, but sort of bring it to the attention of those who can make things happen! I know I probably should have ignored it, but it just gets under my skin, and I really like the community here; dont want some idiot ruining the party.
@lll0228 I suppose I should be grateful he is only a troll! Having a d.w stalker is quite an accomplishment. I just assumed it was a "he" because I have never known a girl to troll.
SO glad to see that his comments are disappearing!
@lll0228: It is all in the name... Doesn't Nyet mean NO???
@meh3884: We can't see who votes for or against comments and answers but that doesn't mean the staff can't...
@hobbitss: Well, yeah. I'm just referring to us as community members.
@lll0228: That's exactly the kind of thing I was talking about with my "Woot! Nemesis" question a while back. :)
@psaux: Yes. Losers tend to have time to do nothing but destructive things so they feel...less of a loser. It's sad, I sympathize them.
@lll0228: Are you sure this isn't your alter ego trying to keep you in check? or is the other the the dominant and is trying to keep you from spreading deals? And thanks to @inkycatz and her lazers. She's the fastest mod in the interwebs.
@lll0228: Makes you almost think the algorithm should weight votes less (positive OR negative) that are repeated interaction in the same direction between two parties. i.e. Let's say there's a consistency threshold where if someone usually votes you in the same direction the vast majority of the time (say 90%+) then their vote has less impact. This would help both with Woot! Nemesii(TM) and ballot stuffers (though I don't know if the latter is actually problem, though there's certainly potential for it).
(On second thought, maybe it should be a sliding scale based on their +/- relationship with you, possibility with logarithmic correction, rather than a threshold.)
@psaux: Good in theory EXCEPT what happens if there is a deal poster that just posts one truly crappy deal after another and you as a community member KNOW absolutely that these deals are truly awful. Should your downvoting of these deals count for any less? And what about those community members who almost always post great deals and funny comments? Should your upvotes be discounted?
Wow. I guess I should be flattered at the attention. I've posted my reasoning numerous times, but @lll0228 doesn't seem to like what I'm saying. So let's set the story straight:
Many moons ago someone posted a question here about referral deals. Sorry, I'm not digging back 6+ months to find it. Apparently this person wasn't pleased with @lll0228 posting to sites that require a login to see any information at all. Reading through the deals linked in that question, and the countless angry, evasive responses by @lll0228, I found myself in agreement.
http://deals.woot.com/deals/users/lll0228/commented
Read a few and decide for yourself.
So I ask myself, what's up with that? That's a lot of anger over a deal/non-deal. Poke around a bit more and find some glaring patterns:
* Repeated posts to referral sites.
* Timing was tuned to avoid the dreaded roll-up, but frequent enough to keep them on/near the fresh tab.
* No attempt to make sure these referral links are even deals.
* Use of tinyurl links to hide amazon referral codes.
* Consistent angry rants shouting down any disagreement.
I figured that down-voting this bad behavior would discourage it. So I set up a bookmark for this user and down vote the obvious bad "deals". Takes two minutes while coffee brews.
And now @lll0228 is has been absolutely fixated on me. I mean heck, if I'm really a troll, why not just ignore me? Down-vote my comments and move on, right?
So, @inkycatz, wooters… am I the troll here? The voting and responses on my question thread a few weeks back made me think I was on the right track.
I welcome reasoned feedback, not spiteful bile.
@internyet: Based on what you've just described, it sounds like you've gone overboard, IMO.
@internyet Knowing more of the story, I agree both that you have some valid points and it seems you've taken it to a bit of an overboard and personal level.
I don't really think any of those deals are good, either. But some things aren't up to us. You're allowed to post what you want here (basically), even though some users consistently post really annoying things (I have a few on that list). That said, you're also free to downvote whatever you want.
@rsmoker: I'll second that...obsession much?
@rsmoker: I assume you're talking about in general (down-voting all the referral links) and not the fact that I actually took the time to write out a three-comment response. :)
It doesn't seem like any effort. The bookmark makes it practically auto-pilot. And deep down I keep thinking that it will have an effect.
I had even attempted to put the referral link question out there to gauge other's thoughts or get a real official response. :(
But, I do appreciate the feedback.
@stupimlico: OK, that's three in a row saying I'm too focused on this user. (I assume you were talking about me with that obsession thing.)
Truth is that it didn't seem like any effort. Click the link it's a game of whack a mole. I felt I was careful to only down-vote the referral links and other problematic deals. But yeah, I did get sloppy sometimes. I think I down-voted an online education thing that later seemed reasonable enough. But I had surpassed Woot's timeout and couldn't retract that one.
Anyhow, I'll take a step back.
@internyet: I stand by my theory that you and @lll0228 are two sides to the same person.
He should take trolling lessons from @iggz. At least iggz was creative and interesting. Admittedly iggz did go too far but we slapped his had a few times and I personally thought of him as the guy you liked to hate, but hate was too harsh.
Worst question ever! ;)
He did it to my Fuji post. I @ replied him with links to reviews. Next thing I know he deleted his comment. O_o
You take the time to dedicate a question thread to this person, use the word "kid" in a pejorative manner to describe this person and call this person a troll.
Anyone have a good deal on mirrors? It appears someone can make good use of one.
Further, a mod deletes this person's comments (presumably based on this question, according to the timeline of events) and leaves this question untouched with two insults directed at a single, specified user.
Does the internet need more hate?
@lavikinga: Well, if the deals are really that good (or bad) one could reason that more people will vote on them who are less consistent in voting regarding the particular other user in question. Also, I'm not saying it'd void out the votes of high-relationship-voters, just limit their impact. Obviously, it'd probably need some tuning, but I think it could be useful in general.
(It'd probably also make sense to take a time window into account as well, rather than the entire history. Also, it could account for what percentage of total votes of User A were with regard to User B, rather than just the relationship scale.)
@lll0228: It is a bit weird, but in his defense so are the tinyurl redirects through facebook.
(he= @internyet )
@curtisuxor: That's just the nature of the beast. If you are going to disagree with a deal, you better be ready to back it up with facts or someone will yell out and complain on here.
@meh3884: Let's add to the story. This is funny, because even @JumboWoot has said that clearly in the ONLY question @internyet has asked here: that Deals.Woot automatically changes all referral links to their own links, so there is no issue with what I posted. If @JumboWoot is ok with it, I don't understand why a non-staff is not.
Flash sales require registration; but a sale is a sale. If people don't like the flash sale model, they are welcome to skip it. However, 81-page of indiscriminate vote-down is just a creepy, stalking behavior.
This person even voted down a GroupOn, a FREE PBS streaming of Sherlock Holmes "deal"; which has completely negated his arguments on deals. I post deals from all kind of sites, flash sale or not. But what he is doing is creepy stalking and personal, and does not contribute to the Deals.Woot community. Two months and he has posted ONE deal and asked one question (and voted down all my deals for 81-pages). http://deals.woot.com/deals/user/internyet
@panthiest: Yes, those are unfortunate since I copied and pasted from a facebook redirect through another deal search "post". Unintentional, just lazy to change them.
@okham: I promise you that my level of education and my daily schedule does not allow for this kind of low level behavior.
@internyet: You received an official response: JumboWoot did it himself; and basically told you everything is fine, or at least it's not your problem to worry about. He singled out my answer and thanked for my contribution.
Get it?
@lll0228: Oh well. I guess it's just a case of "haters gonna hate."
It was a good theory, though.
