Are you starting pre-spring cleaning 2013???

Check out the questions from last year: http://deals.woot.com/questions/search?q=spring+cleaning

@jsoko: The early bird turns the light on, then back off, then back on, then...

Also, I noticed that nearly all of the old deals are wootbot deals. It seems like they never go away even after tattling. Does woot keep these deals from being removed?

vote-for8vote-against

@joshaw: I don't think woot keeps them around on purpose. Wootbot was automatically adding deals from the RSS feeds from Thinkgeek, Walmart, and Buy.com and it would take a LONG time to go through and expire wootbot's 3000+ pages of deals. On the bright side, wootbot's moofi deals are expired in a timely manner :-)

vote-for8vote-against

I do that sometimes, but often in a certain category. Search for like "spoon" or "belt" or something generic and then go through an tattle away. I find it interesting to see that some items posted as deals months (or years) ago are still available or available again at an even lower price. Kinda make me wonder if they really were deals back when they were first posted.

vote-for6vote-against

Wootbot isn't the only one with old deals. I noticed some deals a couple of days ago that showed their age as 3 years and weren't Wootbot's.

I expired some Wootbot deals today and just went back to look; some have been RIPd and others not. He does have 3476 pages of deals.

I've also noticed a large amout of old deals (say, 6 months or more) that the price still holds...not much of a deal to begin with when 18 months later it's the same price and still available.

Perhaps it's time deals.woot sets an automatic expiration date on deals. While it could (maybe should) be sooner, anything from 2 years ago certainly MUST go!

vote-for6vote-against

@gt0163c: I do the same thing, sometimes looking for businesses that post regurlarly and never close out their stuff. I also look at the "similar deals" when I post a deal; I tattle (or RIP if mine) what's bad.

vote-for8vote-against

Yeah, I also occasionally get e-mail notifications from people answering "Woot Questions" that I asked over a year ago.

vote-for6vote-against

Coincidentally, someone just posted a complaint that a deal I posted in mid-October of last year wasn't working. I went ahead and RIP'd it, but folks should be considering the post date, particularly when they're doing keyword searches.
Hey, at least your OCD should be a good way to keep the "tattles" score for your rep up.

There use to be a member that would systematically tattle on very old deals that were dead; either no longer sold or price no longer accurate. Woot staffers would often contact her to complain about her tattling on to many deals and ask her to "give it a rest for awhile". She finally stopped after @jumbowoot personally e-mailed her a couple of snippy e-mails over her habits (price is cheaper then listed so deal still active etc.) so she said it simply was not worth the effort.

My advice is don't bother, it seems they like having all these worthless deals still listed so will not delete them even if you tattle on them. If they really cared about keeping the place current they would simply auto-expire "deals" after a set period of time. Anyway you look at it after a certain point the product is either no longer sold or the price is no longer a deal, just its new normal price.

vote-for8vote-against

@raider9924: I don't think it's worth the effort, either. If Woot wants them killed, Woot can do some sort of auto-kill for everything more than, 14 months old. I weed out my own expired deals, and I occasionally spend a bit of time cleaning out deals from the last couple of weeks, but that's about it.

Frankly, I got really tired of having someone act as the deal-nanny and chivvy us about helping her RIP the old deals.

vote-for10vote-against

@raider9924: Thank you for bringing this to the forefront again. I'm not that 'member,' but am pleased to see this! Too bad it happened; deals lost a very good, conscientious active member. Sad.

vote-for5vote-against

I do it occasionally, usually by category, as suggested. I also have started at the back of MY old deals and try to expire them all, whether they are still good or not. There doesn't seem to be a quick way to do it, though, so I just deal with a page or two then move on with my life. I think I'm about 3 months behind in expiring my own. If there were a way to select an entire page of my old ones and click "Expire" I might catch up.

EDIT: I forgot to mention one thing that makes tattling confusing to me. When you select "expired" as the reason, but are still required to add a comment about why you are tattling, what more is there to say? I usually type in "Deal is no longer offered" or "Price break is no longer in effect" but is this really necessary? Does DW need to know just how expired something is? If anybody knows, please share! Sometimes things I expire seem to still be showing, even though the item is no longer available.

vote-for5vote-against

@belyndag: I have the same problem with the "Expired" reason. Is it really necessary to say "Link dead" or "Price has increased", etc.? I just started pasting in "Expired" into the reason as well. I hope I don't get any nasty emails. :-)

vote-for5vote-against

@joshaw: @belyndag: I guess I view the remark on the EXPIRED tattle as an affirmation that you actually checked out the deal and found that it is no longer valid. I try not to write a book, just a line or two with a thank you and have a good day.

vote-for17vote-against

@raider9924: thank you for remembering me.
@gmwhit: thank you for remembering me.

i am the member that was tattling until i got snippy emails from @jumbowoot. i was tattling 300 or more deals a day. i started with the oldest deal and started progressing forward. everything from march or april of 2010 and before was still active. i was working in may of 2010 when i got the emails saying "they are still active". i went back and double checked. the stuff said "not in stock" or had price drops to which i was told meant "it should probably be relisted, but it is still active". thus i quit tattling.

my tips for anyone wanting to do spring cleaning: search a specific (store, item, poster) and tattle those. sort by date and click the box that says only non-expired. good luck to those that are left here.

vote-for10vote-against

@moosezilla: Wow, 300 deals a day is way more OCD than me. It's honestly a bummer that you were trying to make deals a better place and got crapped on for it.

vote-for4vote-against

Usually just the deals I've added that have expired.

vote-for3vote-against

I don't expire or tattle other deals, but I do make a habit of cleaning up after myself, if you get my meaning.

vote-for9vote-against

I used to, but when the ptb tell a member to stop tattling, it kind of makes it moot. We do the job of populating the site with deals, asking/answering questions, voting, and cleanup - you should expect slightly less contempt from the people who are making money of off your volunteered time.

vote-for9vote-against

@thumperchick: Listen carefully....can you hear my applause? Thank you.

For @moosezilla...You were doing a favor; a good job. The indignity of how you were treated resounds.

vote-for4vote-against

@joshaw: Perhaps I have been remiss. I don't think I answered your question. Do I expire deals? Yes, I do. Of course, you can only expire your own deals. I do that...always.

If you're asking if I tattle on deals to RIP them - yes, I do that, too. In the last 1 1/2 weeks (guessing), I've tattled on about 25 deals. My tattle meter has not moved 1 iota. Odd that. One wonders why. The deals I've tattled on show as RIP. Silly me...perhaps I will now be known as gmwhitmoose. Games? Don't know. Inconsistencies? Beyond a shadow. Intentional? Maybe...

vote-for5vote-against

I never saw anything actually happen from tattling, so no, I do not.

vote-for4vote-against

Yes, I do. That's how this place is supposed to work, right?

vote-for5vote-against

This conversation inspired me to go expire MY old deals. I didn't realize how far behind I was! I expired everything older than 2 months (about 30 pages of deals) without bothering to check and see if they were still valid. If they are that old, no one who might be interested is going to see them, anyway. And if someone does a search for something they need and an expired deal pops up, the link still works.

Next time I get a chance I am going to bring my backlog down to one month. Thanks for the reminder!

vote-for2vote-against

Yes, I frequently check deals that I posted and expire them.

vote-for1vote-against

@jsimsace: You said: "...That's how this place is supposed to work, right?"

Supposed being the key word. FWIW I mentioned in an earlier post that I had RIP'd about 25 deals & my tattle meter did not move in 1 1/2 weeks. A miracle! It suddenly moved all the way to the right w/i a few hours after that post. Now, a day later it has gone from far right (100%) to about 75% - less than it was before I mentioned it. Side note: My tattles have never been that low. Coincidence? One does wonder.

I like how none of the mods have touched this thread ;-)
