Is it just me or has the quality of submission of the woot shirts declined?
Also I could never get the hang of voting in the derby (or Thursdays).

I seem to be buying more shirts. They have not been as "edgy" lately so I have been able to buy for the grandkids.
Different strokes for different folks. What one finds magnificent, another finds meh. What one finds too cartoony, another finds cool. What one finds too cute, another finds absolutely disgusting.
The thing is, we have a wide variety of artists, each submitting their own interpretation of a theme/topic. Not everything is going to work for everyone; take the last three (Hallowoot derby) that won. - most of what I voted for landed outside of the fog (top 9), and ultimately, I only bought one shirt over the weekend. Life goes on.
It is what it is. Woot prints the top three in votes whether it happens to be your favorite or not, and just like in elections, if you didn't vote, then you have no right to complain.
Look through the thumbnails, and click on them for a larger view. If you like it, click on "I'd want one" in the upper left; if you don't, go back and move on. Comments ... offering constructive criticism is good, general kvetching is not.
As for Thursdays ... they close the voting then.
The weekly schedule goes like this:
Friday noon - derby submission starts, voting starts.
Wednesday noon - derby submission ends, voting continues.
Thursday noon - voting stops.
The top 9 (in the fog) will be the candidates for Friday's 1st place, Saturday's 2nd place, and Sunday's 3rd place shirts.
Most of my warddrobe is woot shirts at this point, so, lets be clear I usually buy them all the time. But the shirts from the last couple months just haven't been good. I know I should vote and all that jazz to make a difference, but the shirts i'm seeing just aren't what used to be posted.
I think the shirts are still good, but generally lean towards cutesy lately. That is fine, but not really my preference. Although, I did buy Leafflower form Dec. '09 and love that "cute" shirt. Of course, you can't expect to like everything that wins the derbies.
The raven/skull one for today is pretty cool.
I don't hang out on shirt.woot anymore - did for a while back when, but the negativity got pretty intense so I took off. Maybe it's better now - when I feel the need for a shirt, I check the day's offerings, but I don't frequent the derbies anymore.
@nastyducky: The negativity is mainly with a few vocal members against a few artists because of their past history. Who's right, who's wrong, is for the viewer to decide.
The drama can be avoided if you don't read the comments.
Who woulda thought there was such hostility in the Woot World.
I often follow the ignorance is bliss position!
@coondogg97: Money does strange things, doesn't it? Derby winners get $1000 and $2/shirt sold after the debut day. That can really add up.
Hence, the drama that there is. Vote padding? Yeah, I'm sure there's some of that - compare the votes/sales ratio of an artist, and that'll give a hint. Last minute saves on Monday so a shirt will survive another week? Plenty. Stolen material? There was that in the past too.
My drawing background is on a drafting table, not an artist tablet, so the odds of me ever submitting anything is close to nil. Yet, I stick around. The reason? - seeing all the creativity by the variety of folks, from professional artists to starving one, from those who's background is in fine arts to those who's background is in computer programming, from folks who approach this as a job to those who do it on a whim - I'm in awe of the variety that comes out of one topic. And for that, I support it ... and maybe buy some kick-ass shirts out of it all too.
This question jumped out at me, because I've had a problem with shirt.woot recently. Don't get me wrong, I still love it, but for different reasons now.
I agree with you in part, but there are still good quality designs being produced. However, as with many community sites, it's slowly turning into a big popular-user circle jerk. Almost all of the shirts making it into the fog and getting printed are the same non-creative, cutesie and or sarcastic crap from users that we all know and need not be named. There are plenty of good submissions but they never get a 2nd look. After all, "who could be better than _".
The creativity of the printed derby shirts is dying quickly. The only reason I still like the site, ironically enough, is for the daily selections added by the staff. They're comparatively better than the derby winners, which is funny, because to me the site is now just another place to shop.
Shirt.woot needs to give a mandatory sabbatical for a few select users ahem.
@narfcake: I didn't know there all that was going on, what do you mean by past history?
@dutchpants: I think he means any history, since all history occurred in the past. :P
