How are you going to honor Seniors today?
August 21st is for oldies, but goodies.
It honors our elderly population. On this day, we are encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the value & contribution of elderly people to home, family and society. On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 creating National Senior Citizens Day to be August 21.
You might:
o - Spend some time with senior citizens (Cheerfully let them ramble on about 'the good old days.')
o - Show your appreciation for seniors (Take them out to lunch, dinner or take a meal to them. Offer to clean their house, make repairs, run errands, etc.)
o - Do volunteer work in support of the elderly (Some residents in assisted living homes have no visitors, go chat w/them. Consider volunteering for Meals-On-Wheels.)
If you are a senior citizen, enjoy your day any way you desire. It might be nice to call/visit your elder relatives/friends, too. Take advantage of senior citizens specials and discounts. :-D
Am I a qualified senior citizen? What is the minimum age to be considered a senior, legally? The Proclamation 5847 bill does not specify this important statistic.
Most Federal agencies regard age 62 as eligible to receive benefits reserved for seniors. Social security is different, I am talking about social programs.
@cengland0: Not sure of the actual age. ;-) You're only as old as you feel...blah, blah. I used to think 65 was considered a senior because that's when peope starting collecting Social Security. But you can get SS at 62 (w/a reduction). Also, people live longer now. If SS lasts (doubtful), I believe the age will be raised to 70.
Who's to say when you're really elderly or a senior? AARP = American Association of Retired People. Minimum age is 50 to join!?!?
So...whatever your age, celebrate if you wish. And please remember others who might be of a certain age, too!
By keeping off their damn lawns.
In honor of the holiday, I promise not to knock any senior citizens down the stairs today.
But alas, I know I'll have to get back to the grind tomorrow.
Not putting them on an ice flow?
Some interesting responses. Don't know why I was surprised, but I was. Guess I expected a bit more respect for seniors. And no, I don't think that all elderly people deserve honor - just like any other age group. I try (am not always successful) to respect all people. Have a special place in my heart for those who have been around longer than me. Always have felt that way...
Yes I know that some responses were meant to be humorous. Some were. :-D I sincerely hope that many are genuinely respectful of their elders - especially parents & grandparents. This is just one day...try, okay? ;-)
@captainsuperdawg: Nice. +10 here. :)

I just think honor seniors is what we should do.
