Huh? Someone eliminated the "valentine" tag? That sounds a little :::mumble mumble mumble::: dumb.

vote-for14vote-against

Because its their job to know whats best... I stopped adding tags because they always changed the ones I put on.
BTW
All-knowing mods, What would you prefer we the peoples do regarding tags?

Auto-scrapers can only go so far, your content has "Valentine" as a keyword which is likely why it was added, but a human has decided it's possibly not Valentine specific (which it really isn't) and removed it.

Personally, I don't see it as a Valentine's related deal. It's woman's lingerie that happens to be somewhat heart shaped. So, I'd agree with the change. Subjective judgement :-)

I wonder why they allow us to apply 5 tags, when they just go back and remove them. #OCCUPYTAGS

To keep things uniform I would imagine.

kmeltzer and jeremytheindian are pretty dead on about the logic involved about tags.

As for the other question regarding "what we would prefer" regarding tags, there's been several discussions in the past on tags, and as such, it would be good to look those up and read them over. The real answer being 'if you read those, just do the best you can, and if they get tweaked to keep things uniform/optimize searching/etc. then they just do.'

No foil hats, no hate, we're all in this deal boat together. :)

I've posted deals on here every day, and a few questions here or there. I put what I know would type to hope to trigger the deal. They usually end up taking it from 5 to 4 tags, but whatever as long as it works.

As far as questions go, i just don't tag them anymore, I let them do it, because they know what'll fit better I guess. Still a tad annoying that we don't get to have the tags we request.

@inkycatz: Not annoyed, just curious. Obviously someone on staff there controls the suggested tag part of the program, maybe we need to call them out :-)

I started finishing my deals and questions with my original tags. I like to try to do fun tags to try to humor the palce up a but. I personally understand the necessity of having the mods "Normalize" the tags to help with deal sorting.

Since the mods know the system the best (I'd hope), they know the best tags to apply to the question/deal.

I think the tags are make-work for the Deals staff. I believe that every single thing I've ever posted and tagged has been changed. Even things that I've tagged in appropriate and non-snarky ways...

@dcalotta: bingo. the changes often aren't necessary, and more often don't add any value. uniformity is a great explanation, and yet i'll go back and show you some identical items, months apart, that have different tags. not the consistency i would like.

busy work is the most probable explanation. Dad was in the navy. While at sea, in between duty shifts, they would paint the boat. within a week of painting, another team would start scraping, sanding, and cleaning. The the repainting process would start again, until the paint ran out.

I stopped bothering with tags a long time ago. It's one thing if we were covering general categories like clothing and electronics.. but the ability to add multiple tags allows for better drilling down, or multiple categories - in this case valentines day ideas. It doesn't have to be 100% valentine specific to fit that category, and yet it was deemed necessary to remove it (this isn't about v-day - that's just this week's example)

@kmeltzer: It's actually heart print fabric and, while admittedly a little cheesy, hearts are a Valentine theme.

vote-for2vote-against

@ohcheri: Oh, I think it's nice, but a heart doesn't really make it Valentine specific. People use a heart to signify their love all year round. Just like people eat chocolate and give red roses all year round.

If it were Cupid or Psyche on there, then I'd say that's pretty Valentine specific :-)

Just checked the recent deals I've posted. In 7 deals over 23 days, 4 of the 7 had the original 5 tags in tact (including a "notacowboydeal" tag). Of the other 3 deals, 1 of them kept 5 tags but woot changed a tag, 1 of them was reduced to 3 tags and the other was reduced to 2 tags. Most of my deals fly under the radar so YMMV.
