SINCE I GOT FIRED THREE DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I GOT TO SPEND THE HOLIDAYS WITH MY FAMILY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIRTEEN YEARS. IT WAS FABULOUS.
HAVING LOST MY MOTHER SIXTEEN YEARS AGO TO CANCER, AND HAVING THE FAVORITE AUNT IN THE HOSPITAL SINCE THANKSGIVING THIS YEAR, I UNDERSTAND THE MISSING THEM FACTOR.
YOU ONLY GET SO MUCH TIME WITH LOVED ONES, IT NEVER IS ENOUGH AND OFTEN ENDS BEFORE EXPECTED.

This was the first Holiday season in about 10 years that I was totally into (ie. gifts, spending time, decorating) with the family trying to make it special due to both of our parent's terminal illnesses. Unfortunately, we lost our mother before Christmas.

I have the opposite experience. My family stresses around the holidays so much that it's just prudent to put a little distance there for a while. If anything, I prefer to see them on a summer holiday, no gifts, no giant meals, just relaxed people enjoying each other. Seriously though, my last Christmas at home made me glad I live on the other side of the country. I still miss them, but now I get to think of them fondly instead of all hyper stressed out.

More with my mom's side of the family, less with my dad's. The latter don't like me or my mom a whole lot, so one day a year is actually a lot to deal with.

This year made me want to spend more time with my family. Mom and Dad are getting older and moved away from where they've lived as long as I've been alive, so they've got less of a support system where they are. And I had a really good time hanging out with them.
And then there's my nephews. They're 8 and 11 and really great kids. Well, the 11 year old is solidly in middle school, so he's a great kid in small doses, and I know it will get better once he gets through that middle school stage. We had some time working together on some projects that was a lot of fun. And the little guy, well, he didn't want to leave my side the last about 36 hours I was there. I miss them a lot and wish I lived closer.
But, when I'm gone, I also miss my friends who live near me. They're my family I'm not related to. And leaving them would be just as hard. I think the only solution is to build a transporter in my basement laboratory...now I just need a basement.
