It was apparently used on Miami Vice, but wasn't the theme. Seemed like you heard it everywhere in '78. BTW, Gerry Rafferty.

vote-for2vote-against

It was actually Gerry Rafferty, and [this](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Street_(song)) is what good old Wikipedia has to say about it. I saw no mention of a television show.

EDIT: I need to learn how to type faster.

@erixdad: "BTW, Gerry Rafferty"

GACK! I knew that!! I haven't a clue where the brain-fart came from; thanks for the correction.

vote-for2vote-against

I want to say it was the inspiration for a Bleeding Gums Murphy song on an early episode of The Simpsons. Jazz Man, if I remember correctly.

Here is a quick list of where you might have heard not only Baker Street but also a few other tunes of his: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1391241/filmoyear

@magic cave: Thanks for the upvote. :::sarcasm:::

vote-for1vote-against

@jsimsace: Really? Don't you think your sarcasm is a little childish? That perhaps you're a bit fixated on votes and rep? I answered one such bit of info, missed yours completely, and didn't see it till a few hours later.

I do hope you'll find the inner strength, somehow, to survive the completely unintentional slight.

@magic cave: Hey, ease up a little....please. I thought that it was kind of customary of the OP to vote on all responses to a question when asked, if nothing else than to show appreciation for taking the time to answer. I notice that the mod has changed the question now, so my answer is pretty much pointless anyway. I'm OK with you and your frequent responses, which I learn a lot from, and we're both from the South, so can we be civil again? :)

vote-for1vote-against

@jsimsace: Yes, we can indeed be civil again. As soon as I was aware I'd brain-farted Rafferty's first name, I tattled on the question and asked to have someone correct it for me. Mods/staff are probably especially busy on weekends, and the change took longer than I expected.

I'm unaware of any expectation for an automatic upvote for every response to a question; I generally upvote in a rather spotty fashion regardless of who questions or who answers.

Please accept my apology for escalating your simple and now more understandable comment. "Suthreners" need to stick together. And thank you for the kind words about some of my other posts.

It's been some time since that question has been posted, but I may have an answer to the original question.
Remember that this show was aired in the late 80's so I hope I'm not wrong but anyway...
I think it was used in a New-York based two episodes - I mean episodes in which the action takes place in New-York - perhaps the first two episodes of the 2nd or 3rd season...
I have this picture of Sonny Crockett walking alone in NYC streets with those Sax riffs in the background...

@jarle28: Many thanks for your reply! Your description is pretty much the same as the vague memory I had, right down to Sonny and the darkness.

Thanks!

vote-for1vote-against

OK I did some research... The tune playing on the background of Sonny walking in NYC streets is not Baker Street.
It's You Belong To The City by Glenn Frey.
Not as good as Baker Street if you ask me!
Cheers

@jarle28: Rats. Both songs are similarly evocative, aren't they? I too prefer Baker Street. Thanks for the follow-up!

No problem. Glad to find someone with the same mind-bugging problem that I have! :)
