Okay, here's my list for battling SAD:

#1 - Work out 5 days/week
#2 - Take Vitamin D
#3 - Indoor tanning once in a while (less than 10 minutes - the lights are like therapy)
#4 - Trying to get out with friends at least once a week.
#5 - No matter what, put on grown up pants every day. Even if I don't have to go anywhere.

Good luck!

Echo the advice given by Thumperchick. I had winter doldrums my entire life as I grew up and went to school and worked until retirement in New England and Pennsylvania. Moving to Florida was a glorious decision. I love it here. I realize that you have to get old to retire - better to be younger you know - and not everyone can make the move easily. It means leaving family behind (mine was gone by that time). I think that being involved with people and actively socializing can do wonders for the slump times.

@okham: drinking = time travel

How to get out of the doldrums?
Relocate to Hawaii!! It's hard to be moody there.

Or play the spider game, at http://www.onemotion.com/flash/spider/
The animation is great, and if that bores you they several more games and toys.

I loved the Sketch and Paint too.

@thumperchick: echoing what's said here.

believe it or not, exercise really DOES make you feel better. i do 7 days a week, 4 light days and 3 days weights with cardio and when circumstance makes working out impossible i can physically feel myself falling into a slump.

@klozitshoper: Ditto - But I was transferred to Florida. Move paid for. I am in near Nirvana. Have been here for over 30 years. "Working" here was far better than working in a frigid climate. If you dislike the cold enough, you need to move. Life is too short, eh?

Don't forget to pleasure yourself, which ironically, is what I thought this thread was about in the first place.

@curtisuxor: Interesting, you thought of pleasuring yourself? My initial thought was about baseball. A hitting, pitching slump? No, huh?

Yup, the girls are right with the vitamin D3. Get at least 1000 IUs everyday and whenever you can try to get some sunshine on your face and arms. At least 15 minutes a day if you can. Find a sunny window and plant yourself in it, especially nice if you can do it during your lunch hour.

Exercising to release the endorphins is right on target too.
Do something nice for others & yourself every day, just because. If you're a female, slap on a little makeup, even if it's just mascara & lipstick. If you look better when you catch your reflection, you'll feel better.

One last thing: try to laugh every day. I started listening to the Don & Mike Show years ago when I lived in DC. They were "less mean" than Howard Stern. D&M have gone in separate directions now, but I still catch Mike's podcast. It's silly, but these guys manage to make me smile. Because I've "known" them for so long, they're like family. @klozitshoper and @lavikinga: I had dinner last night with my late-80's great-aunt, a yankee-born lady who moved to southwest Florida many, many years ago. I seldom get to see her because it's hard to catch her at home; she travels more than anyone else I know. She mentioned last night that she swims five mornings a week and likes the fact that the pool is just across the street from where she lives. She goes, she does, she revels, she takes good care of herself. You and she are definitely hooked it to the secrets of "how to make it work out well."

Working out for sure but another thing to try is to stop thinking about yourself so much. I find when I'm in a slump or down or whatever, I'm thinking about what I perceive myself not having enough of or how I wish things were different etc. A good way to stop thinking about yourself so much is to help someone else. Go help a friend or family member or stranger with something. Hold open doors for people..Here's a good one...smile and say hello to everybody that crosses your path if it's even remotely acceptable in the situation. I have gone on runs and smiled and said good morning to everybody I passed going in the opposite direction and the looks on their faces of pleasure at being acknowledged in this cold world intensified the good feelings of running ten fold.

@chezteladog: I try to do that year round. I battle with the mopes more often than I'd like, so I just try to make it a habit to be friendly - it does help.

Laughter is the best medicine. Raises your 'spirits' w/o partaking in spirits. And the old song that's become a cliche - When You're Smiling, the Whole World Smiles w/you.
