Yeah, it looks like that's about the gist of it. This morning I got this reply to my emailed question:

"Thank you for contacting us.

At this time, video downloads of many Showtime Original Series, Showtime Sports events, and other programs, are available through iTunes and a variety of other software platforms at www.sho.com/downloads. Showtime Original Series are generally released for Video download after the full season has premiered on SHOWTIME®. You can also sample select full episodes of Showtime Original Series for free at www.sho.com/preview or by downloading our Showtime mobile app for iPad, iPhone or Android smartphones at www.sho.com/mobile.

Your comments and questions have been passed on to the appropriate parties within our organization, and will be taken into consideration for the future. Thank you again for writing to us, and thanks for your interest in Showtime.

Sincerely,
Showtime Customer Service"

So, not a complete no, but not really useful either.

I hope you are still monitoring this question. I don't know how I missed it when it was current, but I too am looking to ditch cable and yet keep Dexter. I haven't had a chance to check this out yet, but I just found this:
http://www.couchtuner.com/dexter/ I found some references to it on Dexter forums, by folks who seem to use it with no issues. I can't personally vouch for it, but wanted to share the tip.

@pickypickypicky:

Yes, still here.

I just took a quick look at couchtuner and, while I have not verified anything yet, my instinct says that this is about as legal as downloading torrents via EZTV.IT

I'm also extremely wary about installing the ilivid player: I don't KNOW that it is spyware or malware but it feels like it very well could be.

I will look into this later (I should try to get some sleep since I'm heading to a matinee with my daughter in about seven hours).

@baqui63: Sorry, I hadn't had time to research it at all. If I do find anything from a legit source, I will give you a heads up. Likewise, if you come up with anything first, please let me know here. I realized recently that I now have a $100 u-verse bill, just so I can get Dexter. So he's killing me too! I have a few months left in my contract, and then I really need to evaluate my options.

@pickypickypicky:

Will do.

FWIW, I presently pay about $123/month for broadband internet (10mbps, no caps) and digital TV (without any premium channels). I'll save about $65/month if (when) I drop the TV.

Via the Internet and an HD antenna, I can legally watch most of the current TV shows I want for free within a day of their original airing (this is good enough for me as I very rarely watch shows when they are first aired anyway).

The only real exceptions to this are current Showtime shows, which are only available (legally) at about $17/month on top of the cable TV cost; thus they effectively cost about $82/month! (more expensive (per hour) than going to a movie theater at night and buying popcorn, candy and soda there, which I never do).

@baqui63: It's even worse for me, I am paying a little bit more, and the only thing I truly want to watch, that I can't get free/cheap elsewhere is Dexter. Whaaa! : ( I don't want to wait til the following season to watch. If I could subscribe to just that, streaming, I'd be so happy. One thing for sure, When my contract is up, I can't keep this up, just for Dex.
