@shawnmiller - snark aside, it is a serious question :o)

Does the meta tag throw things in chat?

vote-for13vote-against

@dosquatch: Did you wave a blue chicken over a cup of coffee while you were singing "I Talk To The Trees?" No? Well, there's your problem right there!

vote-for13vote-against

@lavikinga: Dang, I knew I forgot something.

How about this - all of the stuff I "voted early voted often" on that went to popular moved my rep +.04% and my position +2. The audacity of asking this question dropped me 0.14% and 8 places.

How the firetruck does one question have a larger negative impact than sending 17 deals to Popular and sitting on top of the Top Voters pane for most of the day?

Yep, nothing wrong with the new rep system at all.

I'm holding out for rep 3.0

Back to the drawing boards with ye, @shawnmiller!

[medit - it would be so nice if the Mighty Fine mods would quit firetrucking with user tags]

vote-for12vote-against

@lavikinga: I lost my blue chicken, and I lost my singing voice, too. Does anything else work?

vote-for13vote-against

@lavikinga: I'm not sure that a blue chicken would work in this case but maybe the rare Black Chocobo might (sorry, son #2 is addicted to Final Fantasy, and the chocobo is nothing more than a giant chicken that you can ride). :)

vote-for13vote-against

@dosquatch: "What you describe could simply be a coincidence." ;)

@moldyearwax: That might be the most brilliant thing I've seen all day LOL

7 votes, 3 comments - 2 of them mine - and the post linked below is popular. Mine (with 7 votes & 8 comments) is not. I'm not saying there is or is not favoratism at work, but one is posted by staff. I'm not staff.

Whomever - if not an answer, acknowledgement, please? I am having an unsatisfactory customer experience with the site. This is the part where somebody with a staff badge steps in and tells us it's our imagination or something, right?

vote-for13vote-against

@dosquatch: A #meta tag is the semantic equivalent to a #chat tag. This is unfortunate, since many questions in earlier times were tagged (or retagged later, by staff) with this tag when the question seemed to merit it. In addition, it was used so often that (in earlier times) it was often the default tag, and many, many questions were tagged with it inadvertently, by people asking "Where's mah order?" and similar things.

vote-for15vote-against

@dosquatch: We were in a meeting! For Leaderboard/ broken gauges questions you need to poke @shawnmiller or @josefresno.

vote-for14vote-against

@faughtey: with a sharpened stick perhaps? I know I've been wanting a new and improved dynamic leaderboard, but this thing is really wonky.

@dosquatch: I fear that I will be of little help as I too do not understand the magic of the dials. I have come to consider them much wiser and greater than me in their ability to seek out the truth of my self-worth. It is for this reason that I have a dr appt next week to up my dosage of happy pills to contend with my declining worth and status among my peers.

Alas...

@shrdlu: "A #meta tag is the semantic equivalent to a #chat tag."

Database semantics, perhaps, but in the realm of human linguistics, META is typically meant as self-referential. A system talking about itself.

Oughtn't equate to chat. Nevertheless...

@faughtey: "We were in a meeting!"

Ah, I understand :o) My bad, sorry to kvetch about the slow response :o)

@thunderthighs: "I fear that I will be of little help as I too do not understand the magic of the dials. [...] It is for this reason that I have a dr appt next week to up my dosage of happy pills"

See if you can bring enough for everybody ;o)

@shawnmiller @josefresno - thoughts?

vote-for14vote-against

@dosquatch: I HAVE IT!!! I KNOW WHAT POWERS THE MIGHTY DEALS AND DASH BOARD METERS!!! It's the same magic contained in the Magic 8 Ball. These are the answers you receive when asking the 8 Ball. Any of them sound familiar to other answers you've gotten at deals?
As I see it, yes
It is certain
It is decidedly so
Most likely
Outlook good
Signs point to yes
Without a doubt
Yes
Yes - definitely
You may rely on it
Reply hazy, try again
Ask again later
Better not tell you now
Cannot predict now
Concentrate and ask again
Don't count on it
My reply is no
My sources say no
Outlook not so good
Very doubtful

We're looking into it.

All told.

vote-for7vote-against

@lavikinga: This, officially, is the most brilliant answer ever!

vote-for11vote-against

@dosquatch: Well, Jumbowoot added the one 8 Ball answer I forgot: We're looking into it.

@Jumbowoot: you know, I'm just pulling your chain

vote-for9vote-against

@dosquatch: :)
Apologies for the delayed response, seriously.
We did have a AHOD meeting today that occupied some of the day but we have seen the evidence provided and we are reviewing it.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

All told.

vote-for11vote-against

@dosquatch: We will be adding some details to the Dashboard that will show when your reputation was last updated. Hopefully this will help answer some of these questions.

vote-for7vote-against

@jumbowoot: Seriously, Jay, a big thanks... Although, to be very honest, I wish that we had been taken a bit more seriously earlier... No offense taken, or intended, but I did feel a bit like my earlier question kind of got the shaft, with only one response from Mr. Fresno, in the form of "hmm... maybe it's a coincidence"... Last time I checked, most of us that participate here actively don't go around poking fun just because we've got some little sneaking suspicion, and especially not on a grand scale.

vote-for8vote-against

@arosiriak: We made some changes to the system today. The calculations are pretty much the same, but now the meters do not change quite so often and it shows you when your rep was last calculated. It still may be the case where you might send in a bunch of tattles all at once and see your tattle meter go down. However, once a moderator acts on those tattles, you should see that meter go back up. The more good tattles you have, the less this fluctuation should occur. The same logic applies to all the rep meters.

Also, bear in mind that each meter is a comparative calculation against you and everyone else in that category. Adding really good deals into the system could cause the deals added meter of someone else to go down.

@josefresno: But but but NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I'm melting, melting! Oooooh, look out! I'm going! Oooooh! Ooooooh!

vote-for6vote-against

@josefresno: Okay, the "updated x hours ago" does help. Knowing what actions the displayed score does and does not take into account is tremendously useful.

You understand the confusion, I hope? I do some things, the score moves, there appears to be ongoing cause and effect... so what is being recalculated in real time that makes the needles and scores wobble if it isn't a true recalculation of the score?

Might it be possible to offer a "recalculate now" button? Perhaps as a q?

vote-for5vote-against

And just a general reaction - holy crud, I was not expecting my score to land in the top 15!

I am so not worthy lol

vote-for5vote-against

@dosquatch: Hey, you want to see something funny? My percentage (99.66) hasn't changed in at least 24 hours, but my position went from 14 to 57. How cool is that? I see that @durkzilla is at 100% (first time we've seen that since they redid the system), and that @lavikinga seems also off the top 15. Of course, my own page says it was last calculated 15 hours ago (very useful information, that), and between the time I started typing this, and now, I've dropped from 57 to 58 (with still the same score).

Interesting, yes?

vote-for5vote-against

@shrdlu: I went from about 500 to 811 since yesterday. My percentage went up about 5 - 6 percent. It says it was calculated 17 hours ago, but within the last few minutes I dropped to 813.

This does seem like a much better system. Say, YES!

vote-for5vote-against

@shrdlu: I think they tweaked some of the math to include more people in the cut for Q - right after my recalc, I popped up in the top 15. My score hasn't changed in that same 17 hours, but I'm 39th right now.

BEFORE the recalc, my score was 98.20% and my position was 99th. Based on that, I figured all of maybe 60-75 people were blackangles - I see now that number has roughly quadrupled (pagefright @ 252 & 98.50%, pwp @ 253 & 98.49%), putting the number of blackangles back on par with the old system.

I find that both interesting and welcome.
@shawnmiller & @josefresno for confirmation of this?

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: My drop is to be expected as I have not been very active. I used to enjoy posting deals, voting and commenting, but lately it all seems like it's a forced thing (that's all in MY head, but yeah, the thrill is gone right now for me.)

Maybe once I go from a blackangle to purple it might gear me into being more active, but right now I don't feel like I have anything extra special to contribute to keep myself on the angle darkside. I just want to have fun.

Knowing that I have to keep doing more & more just to keep the black triangle that I feel I justifiably earned over the last few months is aggravating. It's like earning my swimming badge at summer Girl Scout Camp. I don't suddenly forget how to swim because it's winter. Or to put a military spin on it, I wouldn't lose my Centurion Patch for making 100 traps aboard an aircraft carrier just because now I'm flying a desk at the Pentagon.

continued...

(cont.)
What I'm trying to say is I believe reputation is earned. I agree with that concept. Position on the Leader Board is also earned. However, I don't agree that ones position on the board (or lack there of) should lessen the reputation one has earned in the community. I think they possibly should be independent of one another.

vote-for3vote-against

I'm still at the same percentage and it says that everything was calculated 22 hours ago, but now I've fallen to 1013. That's over 500 spots in about 20 hours. Maybe I can earn a spot in the Guinness Book.

vote-for4vote-against

@meyerk0: and all: There was a math change that increased the total "pool" of users in the reputation system. Since rep is a percentile, this will cause everybody's rep to take some big jumps around until things settle down. We are keeping an eye on it. Your rep should be around where it was before after the system goes through all the users a couple times.
