questionswhere did our woot badges go?

On this side it has only been our triangle. On the wooterville side it is both.

vote-for1vote-against

Triangles only on Deals.Woot... for now.

vote-for4vote-against

There were never qubes next to each post here. Just the one next to your name at the top where it says "Welcome firstpancake". There were and are both qubes and qones over on Wooterville, though. Go take some medicine and feel better.

vote-for1vote-against

both appear over on the other dot-woots where we have a legacy forum code in place. we intend to get the woot experience over here as well - there's a slew of interactivity tied up in the members.woot project.

for now, a link was added over to the new members.woot page from a deals.woot users page - look at the top title bar of each selected user tab for "all Woot activity" in parenthesis.

@chris12345: oh man, i must be loopier than i thought today. thanks for the well wishes

I'm also wondering about the for now too. though it might be nice having our qubes up too. it'll be fun to see what color they will be when they first show up ;)

vote-for3vote-against

also, did the timestamp always go out to the 7th decimal place?

vote-for5vote-against

ha... and here I thought 'how nice, a simple fresh question I can answer' only to be 5th post.

vote-for4vote-against

@firstpancake: Once your Woot qube shows up over here on Deals.Woot it will be the same color as found on your Members.Woot page that @snapster just mentioned (http://members.woot.com/firstpancake)

Now, if you let me geek out for a quick second... the timestamp you see in the tooltip follows the hComment microformat (http://microformats.org/wiki/hcomment) which is a ISO8601 absolute date time.

vote-for8vote-against

@shawnmiller: won't that just be too much visual noise over here?

Personally, I don't want my woot qube here. I can already see all those black boxers who seem to have an axe to grind using against the new folk and they are already annoying when they try to push their weigh around.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: people are here with an axe to grind? hold on...[HAHAHAHAHA] ok sorry.

I think there's enough gain on this and it's not repetitious content for each entry, but we'll keep an open mind.

vote-for7vote-against

@hobbit: But I just finally got my black box! I want to thump my chest and grunt!

vote-for6vote-against

@thunderthighs: I have a black box. I bought several random items, and gave them to charity, just because I wanted to be part of the beta test. Not kidding at all on this.

Other than that I have disposcable income, and am easily entertained, I find the black square meaningless. On the other hand, @snapster, as @hobbit has pointed out, there are those over on wooterville who honestly seem to believe the silly thing that says that they're better than anyone else.

Personally, above all else, I value nice. To quote from Harvey:

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say,

"In this world, Elwood, you must be..."

She always called me Elwood.

"In this world, Elwood, you must be oh, so smart...

or oh, so pleasant."

Well, for years I was smart.

I recommend pleasant.

And you may quote me.

@shawnmiller: For now? How about forever?

I don't want a stupid avatar over here, either. A picture is not worth a thousand words. The quality of words in providing specific meaning is eliminated when a picture is used to express complex thought. The self image each person has changes from day to day, and hour to hour, for some instances, and changes little, or not at all, from when we first became self aware in others.

One prefers the intellectual life above all.

vote-for6vote-against

@shawnmiller: Darn it. I had meant to come back before the five minutes was up. I wanted to say thank you, and that I appreciated the [Edit] note on the changed tags. It's the little things that make me happy. Well, sometimes.

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: "disposcable income". Sorry.

+1 vote against avatars on this site. It wouldn't look as nice here as it does over there. http://www.woot.com/forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=3889851&PageIndex=3&ReplyCount=128#post3893799

People will attach meaning to any information available, whether or not that information really has meaning or can be verified. Data analysis shows any sort of thing that has a leaderboard or similar mechanism attracts people who will try to get on that leaderboard. And that means more traffic than a site that has no such mechanism.

I find it silly, but that's how people are. Kudos to snapster and the woot minions for recognizing that aspect of human behavior and structuring the site so that works to woot's advantage.

@shrdlu: How about having a Pooka as your avatar? No one would see it if you didn't want them to!

vote-for4vote-against

@chris12345: Dang it. I hates the typos more than anything.

vote-for5vote-against

It doesn't matter to me if the woot boxes are here or not. Hopefully if someone starts acting obnoxious, we will nicely handle it as we have in the past. There is no real pressure over on Woot to be polite, but Deals is different. That's great, and part of why we enjoy it!

vote-for3vote-against

@lavikinga: I prefer the one I have, if I must have one. I prefer having none, but that choice was unavailable.

vote-for6vote-against

@axe: I believe that this is the very FIRST time I've said this on the AtW side, but...

Links, or it didn't happen.

Data analysis? Studies please. NO wikipedia. Studies (that was almost one of the funniest Freudian slips ever).

Sigh. I'm going to quit typing for a while.

vote-for4vote-against

@axe: This is the first I've ever participated in a place that has anything like a leaderboard. I must lead a very sheltered life.

@shrdlu: Would you stop that! I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

vote-for3vote-against

@lavikinga: Sorry. I had a profound case of fumble fingers. I have a weed whacker that takes two hands to control, and I have a BIG yard, with a lot of off set flower beds, and trees. It's not an excuse, of course. I should have simply typed more slowly, or even made the effort to proofread before hitting the submit link.

I think, out of the three corrections, the one I liked the most was "Stupides" instead of "Studies" (it made me laugh, and I almost kept it).

[Edit] @hobbit: Ditto. It used to be, when they were just counting Number of Deals, Number of Questions, Most Comments, Most Votes (as in person who has voted for the most things) and Most votes for a comment, that I actually considered making another account, just so that I could make a comment, ask a question, or vote for something, without it showing up. Other than the current Today's Top Voters, I don't think much of them, other than to ponder the potential math behind them.

vote-for9vote-against

@axe: yea because I tried so hard to get on the leaderboard. Really? I have been trying to get OFF it.

@snapster: you have obviously missed all the nasty comments from wooters about how much money they have spent on woot and how we should respect them because of it. Frankly I don't care how much money people spend on woot, it has never mattered to me at all I am more impressed with people who contribute knowledge and kindness. something that not even the staff and volunteer moderators always do.

vote-for3vote-against

@snapster and @shawnmiller: Weren't there supposed to be beta tester badges?

vote-for1vote-against

@sgoman5674: they got caught up in a delay with some other stupides.

vote-for4vote-against

@snapster: and what are these other "stupides"?

vote-for2vote-against

@shrdlu: on behalf of @axe, I believe he's referring to how game mechanics are crossing over into what were considered non-game applications. Foursquare is the most groundbreaking example usually cited (and the source of some of our inspiration) but the theory these are going to pop up everywhere is probably now widespread enough to now be cliche.

here's a video that was shared about a couple months back. I find myself disliking the style in which this is presented so much (geek hype and oversimplified for effect) that I almost disagree with the message but it's still probably worth watching: http://g4tv.com/videos/44277/dice-2010-design-outside-the-box-presentation/

also, lots of stuff on 'game mechanics' google search (hey, including a wikipedia article!)

vote-for2vote-against

@sgoman5674: various stuff. we're pulling in lots of little things that will destroy all that is enjoyed in the neighborhood.

vote-for2vote-against

@snapster: Damn your eyes. I almost sprayed coffee on the keyboard over your neighborhood destruction remark.

In your response for @axe, I am looking for serious studies (from @axe) of things that he'd suggested. My guess is that I won't see them. I'm sure that your suppositions are correct (on his references), but I believe that his suppositions about what does or does not drive behavior are mistaken. There is a large difference between anecdotal observations, and serious studies, as we know.

vote-for3vote-against

@snapster: Oh noes! I guess I'll have to go on a camping trip.

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: ok, your request should stand then.

My thought on it is that everything boils down to enjoyment of visibility of social standing within a relatively fair environment/metric. Like my neighborhood's convenience-store pacman game top-score in the 80's. To the extent that this is combined with crowd-sourcing initiatives and data output is shared back with the same community, you have potential of a repeating circular growth cycle starting/speeding up. I would not claim that we've done a spectacular job of this yet, but, at the very least, the community aspects are enjoyable and the journey is the most exciting part of the ride.

vote-for6vote-against

I love seeing where I am on the leaderboard. Everyone else up there has this lame little number, but me? I'm a man of mystery and intrigue! I'm in ?th place!

That's just how cool I am.

vote-for5vote-against

@eneref: You know, they made a Woot Shirt just for you. I should hope that all those people out there wearing the shirt in your honor appreciate just how intriguing and mysterious you are.

vote-for1vote-against

Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges...
