Excellent question, I am looking forward to the staff's reply.

vote-for8vote-against

That would be a good question for @shawnmiller.

vote-for5vote-against

Reputation 2.0 is coming soon to address a variety of feedback. More details to follow.

vote-for7vote-against

@shawnmiller: Thats both comforting and interesting.

Would you be able to list out what the changes are and how they reflect the system when 2.0 gets implemented. That would be very helpful.

@shawnmiller: Either the comment count is off, or there is a hidden comment. I am quite sure it is the former. I have noticed this on other questions. I hoped that it would right itself, but it has not on those other questions, and I am commenting on this one since it has so few comments (as of yet) and should help to more quickly debug it.

I was startled to see you post so early, now that you are in the Pacific time zone, but then remembered you have the built in early wake-up call. ;-}

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller: I see that the comment I just made is also invisible.

In fact, what is strange is that I see this one as the fourth comment, and yet the comment count is now six (I know I made one that showed right after yours, and yet it seems to be truly invisible).

Is this Monday still?

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller: I would still like to at least see the account filtered out, or else have you not filter out the other vendors. There is so little activity from the other inhabitants that the rise of a vendor account is quite unnerving, especially since the implication is that the account is contributing something more positive than just revenue.

Yes, I'm still sad. I don't think I'll get over being sad, either.

Reputation 2.0 is still a few days away. We're working on some final math before presenting a rough draft over @ Deals.Woot Q. We'll have a fancy little page where you can preview the results before and after. Stay tuned.

vote-for6vote-against

I've stayed tuned, but so far I'm still only seeing a test pattern. When exactly does the broadcast day begin?

[edit] And why isn't this question popular? Questions with less votes and equal comments are popular*, this deserves to be.

New reputation development is still in progress. It's looking much better than the current system. At this point it would probably be harmful to allow community eyes on it. We still have a few unworthy users bubbling up too high in the ranks and we're adjusting the formulas.

We're working towards opening up a preview soon.

vote-for7vote-against

@shawnmiller: I'd still like to hear an answer to the original question. Why isn't the ocheri account filtered out on the Leaderboard? According to some rough numbers on my part, if you weren't filtering out other vendors, I believe that gearxs (or one of their other accounts) would be in the top three, and I suspect that many staff accounts would do the same, if they weren't filtered.

I'm hoping to see a specific answer on why that account is not filtered. It is rather disconcerting to see the steady march up the "popularity" metric, especially knowing how little current activity there is from the top 15 (and the complete lack of activity for five of those).

[Edit] Unworthy user? That's an odd turn of phrase. I'm curious as to an example of one. Would you consider emailing (or PMing) an example of one (just for my own curiosity)? Obviously it would be unhelpful to list them here, and I don't ask that.

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: Woot Staff accounts are filtered out of the leaderboard. Vendor accounts are not. I'm not sure why @sgoman5674 was led to believe they were. It's an interesting idea, but for now they are part of the community too.

Lack of activity is addressed in Deals.Woot Reputation 2.0 that I've been promising for a month now. The work is basically done and we'll be rolling it out as soon as the development staff is all back in Seattle after the holidays (likely January 3rd).

By "unworthy users bubbling up too high" I meant users that had an inflated reputation score based on activities we don't want to reward. Users lacking significant activity in the past few months with 99% reputation would fall into that category.

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller: Thank you so much for the response. That's an excellent definition of unworthy, by the way. Care to list which things you're trying to reward? Here's what I believe may be a partial list:

o Informative comments (akin to "Quality Posts"), although I'm not sure how you'll differentiate
o Better discovery of shill accounts (again, a hard problem)

Others?

vote-for5vote-against

@shrdlu: "Unworthy user? That's an odd turn of phrase. I'm curious as to an example of one."

Me - I expect I'm a perfect example. My reputation significantly inflated due largely to, let's call it 'disruptive behavior'. Not a lot of deals, most of those never making it to popular, but a LOT of comments voted up on the community side for what amounts to soapboxing on a street corner.

I'm thinking that is the sort of behavior they're opting not to reward.

OTOH, it only matters if the score is important to me. It is not.

vote-for4vote-against

@shrdlu, @shawnmiller: Too bad there isn't ways to track what people are replying to here (at least not to my eyes). This way you could track which comments are more thought provoking and require responses.

vote-for4vote-against

@shrdlu: There's going to be an increased level of transparency with the new reputation system because we've had more time to identify where evil users will try to game it. The basic theme is: don't think too hard, just add and vote for good deals, questions, and comments every day.

More specifically: this is a deals site, so adding good deals, voting early on good deals, and tattling on deals that need to be expired is crucial to your reputation.

vote-for5vote-against

@shawnmiller: This made me laugh, and I'm sure that you will be also amused. I am then an evil user. This makes me happy to know (not being sarcastic, I just find it very funny). Gaming the system is my life. Lucky for you, I've (mostly) found other interests. I am enormously heartened about the tattling, but hope it extends to more than just whether or not something should be expired.

In fact, that you are including (the positive kind of) tattling is a very positive note. It may be one of the most useful deal-side things I do (lord knows I have no feel whatsoever for what people think are good deals, but I surely know spam in the comments when I see it).

I would hope that you are still rewarding those that are helpful on the questions side. @Hobbit didn't get to be number one by accident; she got there because she was often the first (or only) responder to things like "Where's my order" and other requests for help.

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller or @josefresno: I note that both @prettywootprincess and @wootiewooterson show up on the leaderboard. Argh! Now, when I look, I see @thefenst (and dearest @faughtey). Feel free to delete this comment if you like, but just in case you're unawares, I'm telling you.

Also, your bug about about authorization is back (I note that I have a comment with a zero vote). Is this Monday?

[Edit] Dang. All fixed now. As I said, feel free to delete this (or not).
