An idea for woot staff re: daily woots
I just finished reading most of the thread over on main woot, about today's deal (an Asus nettop, for those who don't want to go look). Maybe woot staff, who presumably know what each day's woot is going to be, could post related deals over here.
For instance, several folks over there mentioned similar Acer boxes, and claimed to have found great prices for them. Some even linked to those great prices... Woot staff could post those kinds of related products with the best price they can find, and maybe get more deals traffic that way.
You are free to post those related deals here when you find them.
Great idea in theory, never going to happen. Not gonna drive sales traffic to other retailers.
I think the best idea is to try and encourage more of the users on Woot! proper to head to Deals.
The point is, some of these users are going to go to other retailers anyway--they like the concept of the product, but not the actual one being offered. If Woot posts deals over here, and folks over there go searching, Woot can get the clickthroughs. They aren't losing a sale, they weren't going to make that sale anyway.
Anyway, it's just a thought spawned by reading all those "this is a better system for a good price" type posts.
I agree with @sfeitler on this one... I, for one, have many, many, many times gone to other retailers, both in searching, and in buying. Woot still gets some of my business, but not any more or less than they would have otherwise, unless they unquestionably had the best price on the specific product I wanted in the first place.
However, I also agree that one of the best things to do would be to just have some helpful hints redirect people over here to Deals, where they're more likely to find what they may have been looking for in the first place.
interesting point to be made is that when some folks post deals here and others (because I think they like to post it) will say they have seen the item for less elsewhere - but they never prove it. Still others will post the better deal IN the deal - which isn't the point of deals but that is fine. I realize you are talking about woot, but I just thought I would point out that the same thing happens here too. all. the. time.
@hobbit: It's true... lot's of us do it, and I am among the guilty, but the point is this; should regular Woot folks be subliminally led over to Deals? I don't know that it's for me to say, but that's sort of how I first got my introduction to Deals.Woot.
It's being done actually. I don't have the motivation to find the exact examples, but many of the past woots have had links within their descriptions linking to other/related items over here on deals. I don't think it's a daily thing...but I'm pretty sure it's on woot's radar.
Both yesterday's and today's main woot items have cross-links over to posted items on deals.woot.
Today's (6/4/10) is a micro-SD card to use in the refurb'd Sansa; yesterday's was an external HDD and HDMI cables. Two of the three were staff / sponsored deals, one was user-posted.
That will likely cause some new traffic over to the deals site, no?
@afurball: Yeah, but more than driving traffic, I was thinking if woot posted deals for extremely similar products (not accessories) in the fresh deals section (not featured, that seems like it would be competing with themselves too much), they might get some traffic from folks who read the thread and decided they wanted, e.g., not the ASUS but the Acer that someone else was talking up.
