Woot This Deal Button Installation Instructions
Turns out, providing bookmarklet installation instructions across all the different web browsers out there is quite a bit of work.
* Firefox calls them "bookmarks", Internet Explorer calls them "favorites".
* Firefox puts them in the "bookmarks toolbar" while Safari simply calls it the "bookmarks bar".
* Internet Explorer scares you with a "this might break your computer forever" warning.
We want to make adding the Woot This Deal Button to your browser as easy as possible. Part of that is making sure our instructions are as accurate as possible.
So try installing the Woot This Deal Button in your browser: http://deals.woot.com/deals/bookmarklet
Report back if there's someway we can improve the accuracy of our installation instructions.
Chrome:
"Don't see your bookmarks toolbar?
Select the tools icon and make sure
"Always show bookmarks toolbar" is checked."
Your instructions are correct, but CTRL+B does the same thing. You probably already knew this
@fgarriel: I also think this would be a good idea... most notably, in Chrome, if you drag the bookmarket to the address bar you get redirected here:
http://deals.woot.com/?add=http://deals.woot.com/deals/bookmarklet
Which will probably be a common mistake for Chrome users that do not have bookmark bar displayed (I believe the bookmark bar is in the default state of 'hidden' when Chrome is installed)
I didn't know that I could keep my bookmarks bar displayed until now. Actually, I don't think I'd have wanted to until now, but I'm getting used to it. I've got the "Woot This Deal" bookmarklet, as well as the "Make SoCute!!!" from http://www.socuteurl.com/ Learn something new every day, sure... but why do I feel like I'm losing brain cells in the process?
What? No love for Opera? How sad... and typical.
I think it should be clickable so we fill it out from this site instead of having to have it bookmarked.
Don't see you bookmarks toolbar?
Select Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks Bar
in your web browser menu to see it.
In Safari Show Bookmarks Bar is actually under View, not Bookmarks.
how come the BBS codes don't work here?
Also an Opera user... any news for us?
Also, in Chrome, see that orange star next to the address bar? click it and it creates a bookmark. It will ask you what you want to name your bookmark and where you want to file it (folder).
What about Tool bar plug-ins like Yahoo and Google. Is there a way to add the Woot this Deal to them?
I use several different computers so I keep most of my bookmarks on the tool bar because its easy than trying to sync all the browsers.
Just checked our most recent analytics and Opera accounts for 0.89% of total visits. It's difficult to justify time and resources on making this perfect for Opera when we've got a lot of work to do on everything else.
That said, we've been able to get the bookmarklet working in Opera (just tried it seconds ago) but there's aren't currently any "official" instructions for getting it installed.
Right click the "Woot This Deal" button and select "Bookmark Link..."
Ever think about an iPhone app? I know I use the app for all the other woot sites.
@cheshiremoe: Ever try xmarks? You might find that useful.
As for the "Woot This Deal" button, I like it. Those instructions were very straightforward as long as it can be made to work across different browsers.
When you use the button it forces you to navigate away from the page with the deal on it. If enough information isn't gathered by Woot, it is very difficult to gather the information now that the deal page is gone. Would be easier if you did not navigate away from the deal page.
@sirjinx: A WOOT designed IPhone app would be great, and worth a couple bucks.
Can I vote know on a Smart Phone app? I don't have one, so that'd put me at a huge disadvantage during w00t-offs.... ;) Maybe if you offer one during the next w00t-off?
Kidding.
Sort of.
The drag and drop of the "Woot This Deal" button worked from me using FireFox. Made it very easy to mark a deal for woot.
Another Opera user....I know that there's not many of us, but it would be nice to be able to fully participate.
I WOULDN'T WANT TO WOOT WITHOUT IT !
Opera users: if you bookmark the button, you can go to Manage Bookmarks, and from there drag the bookmark to you Personal Bar, or you can go to your customization settings and drag the bookmark to 'My buttons' to give you a custom button so you can add the link anywhere else, like the status bar, or address bar, or whatever.
I agree with @orionusf: would it be possible to re-code the button to open a new tab/window with the deal-add function instead of loading it over the current page?
I'll gladly reinstall it since it was so easy-peasy for Firefox. :D
I don't care. You guys figure it out and let me know. You've made it so f...ing complex...Whew!
S.
I just stumbled on this question and would like to let you know that recognizing the browser and giving directions based on that is a beautiful thing. Props for good design there.
