questionswhat is the difference between car batteries?

What specifically are the differences you are talking about? Is it the amps that are different or the posts or the size? I'm pretty sure the amps won't hurt aside from wasting money paying for more that you don't need. The posts matter because you won't be able to hook it up. And size, if it's too big it won't fit, and if it's too small, it will flop around, and that's no good.

Some older/foreign cars don't use the same voltage (6, vs. the more common 12). My father-in-law's old porsche 356 has a 6v system.

@stupimlico: Pretty sure the only real difference is amps and I don't live in a place where it freezes so I don't need cold cranking amps. And it was the best priced battery there. I'm gonna hook it up and see what happens. Keep an eye out in the sky for me in case it blows me up!

I doubt the voltage is an issue, as Costco isn't likely to stock 6 volt batteries. Amps-wise, if you're not in a too-hot part of the country, like Texas, the more amps the better. And FYI, they also make 8 volt batteries for old Flathead Ford 6-volt cars- and they were POSITIVE ground.
The only thing that can be a problem for newer cars: some vevicles, like the HHR and the older Corvettes, have the battery inside the car and require low-gassing(they produce hydrogen gas when charging) batteries, and some also have recessed top terminals to prevent accidental contact(car fire).
If price is the real issue, go for the longest free replacement warranty. At O'Reilly's for example, there's $5 difference between a 1 year and a 3 year free replacement.

@fenriq: you'll be just fine.
If you didn't this time, next time look at Wal-mart, their Everstart batteries are a Consumer Reports best buy and a good battery.

@stupimlico: Sorry, I do not and will not ever spend a penny at Wal-Mart.

The replacement battery from CostCo fit fine and has worked perfectly well since I put it in a couple of days ago. And it cost half the price of one from the Kragen/Auto Zone places.

@fenriq: No need to be sorry. Glad it's working out for you.
