How do you count down to important events?
What's your favorite way to count down to important or exciting events?
As a kid I used to make paper chains to count down to events like Christmas, my birthday, the end of school or start of vacation. In college I wrote down the number of days until the end of the term in my planner and sometimes made more paper chains. More recently I've used countdown applications on my computer. My new favorite is to pick a movie that's coming out around the time when something will happen (particularly if it's a few years away) and follow the progress of the movie as a way to count down.
For example, there's some stuff that's due to happen near the end of the school year/start of summer in 2015. Avengers 2 comes out 1 May 2015. I'm already interested in the movie so I follow it's progress on a couple of different web sites. The other Marvel movies leading up to Avengers 2 also provide some good intermediate things to look forward to along the way.

@cengland0: Yikes! I definitely didn't mean to. I hit submit...computer/internets took a while to think about it and I figured it was going to time out. But then it posted.
I didn't mean to spam anyone, I promise!
Many thanks to the mod who fixed this.
@gt0163c: paper chains. We used construction paper chains to help our little ones grasp how many days until Daddy came home from cruise. Usually the chains had close to 190 links, give or take, each representing how many "sleeps" before the big day.
The link for the beginning of each month was a special color and extra special days like birthdays & holidays got the glitter/sticker treatment. ALL of them were numbered. The chain usually hung in the family room and it was pretty sobering to see the darned thing stretch along more than one wall. Those last few sleeps "and a wake up" were always the hardest and there were times when I had to secretly add a few links to the chain.
