Google Maps is nice, free and available for WM, IOS & Android. (iPhone is IOS.) There is also software available, at a cost typically, that is actually from GPS manufacturers such as Garmin. People who use their phones as a GPS swear by it. I say poppycock!!! A dedicated GPS unit is more reliable and offer better performance (granted that's said only from my limited experience observing other drivers using cell phones).

My phone GPS is nowhere near as useful as my separate unit. We have a garmin nuvi 1300T and it is far more reliable. Phone GPS is still really spotty in my experience for getting directions, and a lot slower. You should take a look at this one:

@csl312: That's actually the exact model I was looking at that brought on this question. If an app is cheaper/equivalent, then I'm happy to do that too.

Any Legend of Zelda fan knows the only things you need to navigate the darkest dungeons are a Map and Compass.

PS I also think a smart phone is the way to go. I prefer android.

What kind of phone do you have?

I actually first became aware of Android back before the OG Moto Droid was released because I was shopping for a GPS and didn't want to deal with maps getting outdated. I figured that surely there must be an option that would use Google Maps, or something similar, to have always-up-to-date maps on the GPS.

That's exactly what Android offers.

I've used my HTC Incredible as my only GPS since the phone was released (over 1.5 years now) and it's never let me down. Especially now that you can pre-load and save maps if you know you're going to be in the middle of nowhere and might not get service. Oh, and it takes live traffic conditions into consideration when calculating the fastest routes.

So to answer the original question - I'd just use Android.

@anotherhiggins: I appreciate all the android love, even though I disagree with it. I have a 4s. I know Android has built in turn-by-turn nav, but that's not really going to be an option for me. :)

Rand-McNally puts out excellent analog map products. If you're a triple-A member you can get FREE analog map products at any AAA office. When civilization falls and brings down all the satellites you'll wish you had learned how to use paper maps :D
