Have you ever successfully thrown a boomerang?
I was given one at work today (yes, random). After an hour of failed attempts I jumped online to look for tips. I found that lots of people are in the same boat - nobody can throw this thing! Ha!

I can throw one just fine. It's making it come back that's the problem.
I should have worded that differently.
Can you throw a boomerang and make it come back?
HA!
We had one when I was growing up. If I recall, I actually managed to get it to come back properly once in all those years.
@thunderthighs: Me too. It was a total fluke and almost knocked out the windows to the cabin when it did.
We had an Aussie Scout troop show up at Scout camp one year. Their Scoutmaster gave a class on carving and throwing boomerangs. I got the the point that I could get it to come back and I could catch it, but I could never manage to hit a target with it in the process.
Yes I have. I have a friend from college who is on the US Boomerang Team (yes, there is a team) and is internationally ranked. So I learned from as close to a professional as you can get. The key is throwing about 30 degrees from into the wind and throwing the boom about 20 degrees off of vertical. Although the amount of off vertical depends on the design of the boomerang. The other key is the grip. I found that a "pistol" grip works best for me. But other people find other grips work better. The throwing motion is also different than what you'd expect. It's almost like if you were throwing a football, but not throwing across your body and not rolling the boomerang off your hands like you would a football. It takes some getting used to. It also helps to have a good boomerang. Most of the ones that you see in stores aren't very good and need lots of tuning to actually get them to come back.
My sister did this once, it was a wood one, with a fairly sharp edge on it. As it came back around she put her arms up yelling "I've got it, I've got it," only to miss it and having it smack her right across the nose. I was sure her nose was broken, thankfully though all was fine.
That was the first and last time I ever saw a boomerang work properly, good times
Nope. I usually end up losing those things unless I'm at a large park which I don't go to very often.
I was never able to get the plastic ones to work but when I was a teenage in FL I had some friends with a wooden one, we were able to get it to turn back but we could never get it to come back to us. It was still cool though to have it turn and come back with in 15 feet of you.
I was told I did once....all I remember is waking up laying in a grass field bleeding.
@flashkill: Yea, that's about what we were able to do. We would actually have one person throw it and another would stand about 10 feet to the side to catch it.
they are easy to throw you just never know where it will go
Used to get plastic ones as a kid. As I recall the trick was in the angle and a funky snap to the wrist, also using the "pistol" grip.
I have successfully thrown several, wooden traditional ones, and the 3 armed plastic nerf ones, the wooden one, came with a little book, with that said, I have never caught one. I have dodged out of the way as it returned
I had plastic ones as a kid. They were red, hard plastic, with a black stripe or two on the edges. I caught it a few times, and it hurt. Mostly they ended up on neighbors rooftops... or through their bedroom windows.
Remember, the weapon/hunting tool wasn't built to come back to you. So if you throw it and it doesn't come back, you're accurately doing it the old school way :)
(I've never been able to hit an animal with one either. I had lots of fantasies of being the little feral kid in RoadWarrior with the metal boomerang that was razor sharp.. but they never panned out, so I stayed in school)
i have successfully thrown a boomerang, but it didn't like me so it flew away
i'd have a net ready just in case the boomerang returned
cause i'd definitely duck the s--t out of that
I made one in woodshop class, and threw it a few times on the school grounds... brought it home, threw it once at a local park and it got stuck on top of a tree.
We had a few lessons from aborigines on a trip to Australia but couldn't make it work.
