I really liked the picture. This was announced on the eve of the 9th birthday of iPod.

It will be missed.
Sony has a history of hitting really well or really poorly. They pushed the Walkman, and changed the industry.
At the same time, though, Sony has a curious predilection towards inventing proprietary technology at the expense of perfectly good industry-accepted alternatives. Flash media, with the many standards to use, but Sony feels the need to invent memorystick/MS-duo. And UMD. And Beta. And MiniDisc. and, and, and.
And I'm flat surprised, still, that Blu-Ray won.
But the Walkman was a hit. It should be remembered. Perhaps, though, not mourned.
I wonder if we will see them on woot now, for .99
@hobbit: No, maybe .01
Do they still make cassette music tapes and stuff? I stopped buying them when CD players came out.
@dosquatch: I owned several Walkmen, as well as the short lived, under-performing Discman. And while it didn't work when moving, even with shock prevention, that was one of the best Christmas presents I remember getting.
@hobbit: You can still buy new blanks, but it's my understanding the format is otherwise dead.
The Walkman shall never die! http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/142fbb32-9a7e-4ade-82a6-e0a16e0dc38e/long-live-the-walkman-sony-fx290w-walkman
Sony DAT was better, in theory, who could afford one? OMG I wanted a mini disk so bad!
Er... it's only dead in Japan. The Gizmodo article has been updated.
Still, free publicity for the Walkman either way.
Journeyloaded is correct. Production has only stopped in Japan but will still be available in the US.
I still have my Yellow MiniDisc. That thing was awesome.
I just got rid of my wireless walkman... LOL
That's a real...dragman.
I have a MiniDisc and still use it, since I can control it with the remote on the headphone cord, unlike my Sansa, makes it great when I'm running/biking in the many nearby parksand don't have to worry about listening for traffic
