Do Chiropractors freak you out?
I injured my back on Friday (not serious) and it caused me to not be able to turn my head, or lift my arms above shoulder level. So, off to the Chiropractor for the first time. It's scary to have someone "adjust" your neck/back.
So, do Chiropractors freak you out? Do you think they're quacks? What about "whole body healers/massage therapists?"
quacks. Particularly the ones that claim to cure allergies or depression by spinal manipulation.
I had a surgeon tell me that Chiropractors were "bone witch doctors".. I still haven't decided if I want to see one or not..
My brother went to a chiropractor recently though, and when he was laying on the table I noticed that his left leg was longer than his right by 1-2 inches. It wasn't longer after the appointment..
they CAN make a sore back/neck FEEL better in some situations, but even friends and family who use them acknowledge their chiropractors never actually CURE anything and they have to keep going back.
i have been warned before that if you ever go to a chiropractor most insurance won't cover anything in the future with whatever part of you the chiropractor was working on.
Only if his name rhymes with "Smeshshmorkian".
@moosezilla: most good insurance plans these days cover chiropractic visits, usually with a very limited number of visits per year.
I used to be at the doctors at least once a month with various infections... after going to the chiro, now I have to go like once every 2 years. I also don't go to the chiro that often, once a month at most.
I slipped on some ice a few years ago and within 2-3 days I could barely walk. After one visit to a chiropractor I felt better, by the 2nd visit I was "fixed". This was 20+ years ago and I've never needed another adjustment.
I used to feel the same way about healers and massages. My youngest is in school now for massaging , I thought ohh kaaay, really, if that's what you want. Well I suffer from chronic pain due to auto accident. One particular area that has hurt for the past twelve years is now gone, It was massaged out, by my child, I now wish I had tried sooner. As far as chiropractors, I think there are very few who can help.
I'd always gone to one growing up that used a tool to align the spine. The ones that manually do it by snapping you around and pushing things are the ones that scare me.
I highly recommend the ones that use the clicker tool thing. (Sorry I don't know the scientific name.)
I swear by them!!! I got into a head-on collision with a drunk driver and suffered severe whiplash that made a vertebra in my neck protrude and cause migraines and other crazy things to happen, like losing my hearing and experience excess salivary functioning. Looking at the x-ray, duh, my neck should not look like that!! The chiropractor I saw explained how to re-align my neck. 2 weeks (4 times a week) then another 3 months slowly weaning down to just a monthly adjustment worked wonders. My hearing came back in less then 2 weeks and I stopped excessively drooling (if you were near it seemed liked I was parched or constantly licking my lips).
@djenkins1982: The tool is called an Activator.
@jsoko: Chiropractic adjustments are said to boost the immune system. I believe it, I was healthiest when I was getting adjustments (no cold, flu, allergies).
When I was a kid I fell and hurt my back and they sent me to chiropractor. (I put a kitchen chair on top of a couch footstool in an effort to climb onto the top level of a bunk bed...not sure why exactly I thought that was a good idea) and I was actually terrified of going to the chiropractor. It hurt a lot and I remember crying a lot over going and hating it. Freaked me out something bad back then.
I go to one frequently... At the age of 13 I developed slight scoliosis and it has given me chronic back pain ever since. I find they do help quite a bit. I do feel though when you're laying down and they stand at your head, about to crack your neck.. that they really have my life in their hands and they can just snap it any second. Obviously, it's never happened.
Worthless, I went once and they told me my neck was inverted...Do yourself a favor and see a physician and/or physical therapist. They can at least explain what they are doing and why, whereas a chiropractor will push homeopathic crap that has no replicable results.
@stevebosox: I had a wholly different experience than what you describe. The Chiro I saw was able to explain exactly what happened, why my muscles reacted the way they did, and tell me what it was going to take to fix it. All in english, with easily understood medical terminology, and using standard equipment (like electro-muscle stimulation to loosen the tension). I left the office with exactly the amount of movement and lack of pain he told me I would have, and did so without pain medication or muscle relaxers.
I know there are some that do what you describe, but I personally wouldn't be so quick to dismiss a logical, simple, homeopathic remedy either.
@potter412: Yes! It goes completely against human nature to allow another human being to hold your head/neck like that. shudder
As in most things, YMMV. Some are quacks or swindlers, some seriously do good work. If you can be "fixed" in a visit or two like I was when I was having back pain from propping my elbow on my desk all day at work, great. If your doc tells you that you will need weekly visits for the rest of your life, go ahead and get a second opinion.
My parents swear by the use of a chriopracter, and try to egt me to go in(since I have the same frame as my father), and they love to talk about how he twists their neck and it makes a huge cracking noise and they feel great.
I always slams the brakes and say no way in hell is someone else twisting my neck and making a brekaing noise.
If you like them or swear by them, more power to you, but I refuse to let someone touch my neck and back for fear of something going wrong.
You are going to get ups and downs. I go to a Chiro. When I first injured my back, it helped and he put me back into alignment, now I am doing regular upkeep and don't find it as beneficial. There is merit to what they do, but they also try and sell you on regular treatment.
Started going to a chiro this year. I'm actually quite surprised at how well it's working. I can do things without pain that I've not been able to do comfortably in 5 years. He doesn't usually do manual adjustments though. Uses a machine called the Pro-Adjuster that does it all electronically.
Kinda funny joke to pull after you tell someone you went to the chiropractor. This works well if you have long hair or are wearing a hoodie. Take a foam coffee cup, hide it under your hair/hoodie behind your neck. Act like you're holding your neck (while holding/hiding the cup). Tell someone you went to the chiropractor and say they taught you how to do your own neck adjustments. holding the cup in your hand hidden with your neck/hair/hoodie, crush the cup at the same time you pop your head to one side. For effect and to distract from the hand on the back of your neck, place your other hand on your face to help with an opposing head turn.
I got someone to jump up out of their desk with that one; they said it "gave them the willies to hear that noise thinking it was neck bones."
Chiropracters are quacks, do yourself a favor and go to a physical theropist instead. Acupuncturists,, anyone who sell stuff to detoxify your body, and snake oil salesmen fall into the same catagory.
