I rooted my phone and installed CM9 on my touchpad. I wouldn't say you have to be a genius to do it just smart enough to follow instructions.

I have wrote a rom for my company we have flashed over 2000 devices with ony 1 issue. The device was broke before it was flashed.
Battery needs to be at %100 before you start.

all the "upgrades" I have done qualify more along the lines of Lego's... For the most part they fit in one place and only go in one way which kind of makes it hard to mess up. I've built a couple computers from scratch.. bought all the parts slapped it together, updated the BIOS on the mother board (and sometimes other devices) installed an OS... I don't think that really counts toward your question though. I think putting together a desk from a box bought at your local office supply store is more difficult than building a computer or flashing ROM. But that's just my opinion.
