Is an HTPC Processor upgrade worth it?
[This is for the 'build your own' nerds out there -- like me]
I have an aging htpc that I want to refresh. It's a dedicated HTPC, but I use it for video conversion to my mobile device. It is currently running an AMD Phenom x4 9750 (2.4Ghz). I was going to spec out a new Intel i5 system, but found MSI has a BIOS update that will support the Phenom II x6 CPUs.
That being said, will I get a decent performance boost by replacing the CPU with a Phenom II x6 (2.7Ghz), or is that throwing away $130 I could be using for the new i5 gear? The key is in the video conversion speeds -- everything else is equal.
