Has anyone ever had to decide to accept an Industrial Disability Retirement?
I know that it is not very common for many people to truly enjoy their careers. But when a workplace injury occurs and you are told that you can't come back to a career that makes you happy...how do you cope?

I went thru all the workers comp. crap, tried to do all kinds of different things in the meantime. Lawyers for the other side in a workers comp. case will drag out all the proceedings until you are more than absolutely, positively, beyond any definition of any word remotely related to the word "BROKE"
Then they give you lower than dirt for all the hard work you did for their company, but, you take anything to pay some of the bills and keep yourself out of jail !
So now, after almost two years and going to tons of different Doctors, I was finally approved for SSI. This does not even begin to cover 1 weeks pay when you were at the height of your career, and now you have to learn to survive on this for each month for the rest of your life !
I was in various aspects of home building/ carpentry for over 25 years.
Now, I can do nothing due to an Industrial Accident, Great !

I understand your pain and frustration. I use the term for the city's (employer) method to handle these claims as "starve "em out." The employer does exactly what they did to you. They deny your claim, you have no income, your bills pile up, home foreclosure can occur, divorce, and any other nasty thing that can happen to a legitimate victim without an income. Hey, you can't even take another job to pay your bills because that would be used against you by the employer to "prove" you are faking your injury.
I have been fighting the city for over a year with my work comp lawyer, my team doctors, the city team doctors, and the Agreed upon Medical Examiners. I sold my house and luckily had enough equity to survive. However, they denied my claim, used private (I thought) conversations against me in depositions, hired private detectives to follow and film me, and basically turned their backs on me after 20 years. Oh, they finally accepted my claim but I have yet to see any income.
