Which is better basic food staple: Onions or Garlic?
Honestly, sometimes I am not sure which I like more, because I use them both so often in my cooking. However, of these two, if you were cooking, could you not do without?
I like both equally, but my GF doesn't like onions so it's mostly garlic at my house now.
Split the difference and use shallots.
Garlic for me... Garlic everything!
I've never heard of a garlic ring.
to me it's 6 of one a 1/2 Doz for the other, love 'em both, esp in concert w/ each other.
I have a Co-worker whose Husband and Son are both VERY allergic to BOTH Onions and Garlic. Like Anaphylaxis type allergic reaction.
For those of who who thing chopping garlic is too much trouble, consider investing in a garlic press. http://www.amazon.com/OXO-SteeL-Garlic-Press-Stainless/dp/B0000CDVD7/ref=sr_1_2?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1352256243&sr=1-2 It's a time saver for sure.
I'd hate to have to choose, but if forced, I'd go with onions. There's a bit more that you can do with them vs. garlic.
wikipedia says "A staple food, sometimes simply referred to as a staple, is a food that is eaten routinely and in such quantities that it constitutes a dominant portion of a standard diet in a given population, supplying a large fraction of the needs for energy-rich materials and generally a significant proportion of the intake of other nutrients as well." we use garlic for flavouring a lot of stuff we cook but not as a staple. mrs. 1 doesn't like onions. i do, and cook often with them, but i'd say i don't cook any dishes that are predominantly onions, i use them mostly for accent. so i guess neither meets the definition of a staple for either of us.
Team Onion here for its versatility.
@tippypaws: I guess my right eye is garlic, because I'd pick my right eye for sure. I can barely see out of the left one... and I barely like onions.
@tippypaws: I read that as "which one of my eyes I would rather eat." And now I'm off both onions and garlic for a while.
I've gotta have garlic and would miss it more than onions. That said, I believe onions are the better basic food staple, as more recipes call for them than garlic.
I can't answer because I use both very often. Picking one is like trying to choose which one of my eyes I would rather keep. However, I would like to point out that I know a guy who can't eat onions, garlic or even garlic or onion powder. Also he hates vegetables of any sort. I find it damn near impossible to cook for him.
@moondrake: Two words: garlic press. No more work.
I detest onions, so it has to be Garlic for me.
I have to say garlic. Onions are more versatile, but love the flavor of garlic much more.
For me, onions, because I enjoy onions by the bushel. I very rarely buy garlic for use at home, although I encounter it in restaurant food often. It's a lot of work to cut up, and if I cut up enough of it to make it worth the trouble then it is too much and upsets my stomach.
Garlic. I can take or leave onions but I don't know what I'd do without garlic.
How can you have a food poll and not list bacon?
Onions. I love them both, but I think onions are more versatile. Plus, is there a better smell in the kitchen ever than onions sauteeing in butter?
