I can't believe no one has chimed in on this one yet. I, personally, like the Sony NEX series. Some will argue that they're not comparable to full-blooded DSLR cameras, but the pictures look fantastic and they're capable of full HD video also. They run in the $400-600 price range depending on what bells and whistles you decide to get. Here's a link:

If that link doesn't work, just click STORE, then under cameras, select NEX

We've had plenty of differing opinions on this one, and from various levels of amateur to professional photographers - here are the first two that I dug up, though there are more:

Personally, I'm a big fan of the current Nikon lines for a variety of reasons. They offer very convenient use, and functionality. I have and love a Canon as well, but many of the settings I like to change are buried within menus for it, where my Nikon is much easier to adjust on-the-fly. I also appreciate its ability to handle various lighting situations with consistently good results. Its image processing is similarly top notch. However, I would avoid any of the lowest level entry models, regardless of line. And video is a perk - it's a DSLR, which is meant for images.

Several pro/am photographers I have talked to say just about any Nikon or Canon DSLR will do good. Main difference (from what I've seen) is in the features. Also DPREVIEW.COM has a lot of information. Main problem I've seen there is that it's easy to get overwhelmed with the data.

And that's part of the problem. There is so much data in the ads and on the sites that it seems like the cameras are all more or less the same. The other part of the problem is reading reviews. Most people seem to love a particular model while a few loathe it and say to stay away at all costs.
