Your idea of pic in nice frame is a good idea. Does the family collect anything, example: crystal figurines, spoons of places they have visited, unique beer mugs, salt & pepper shakers. Hope you find the right item.

Good idea on the picture. If you can pick up a frame from the area where you toured, that would be a nice touch.

A photobook of your trip. Hopefully you will have a number of pics of them to put in it.

@meems212: Thanks for confirming my gift idea!

They are "one of those" people who have everything they need, and hard to shop for! His mother collects tins and likes bath products. She's a bit easier. But his dad is a farmer and that's his hobby.

They love their grandchildren to death though so that's why the picture seemed like a good idea.

If it's a really good photo you could send it to one of those "turn your photo into an oil painting" places. But a real oil painting by hand, not just a digital conversion process. The photobook is another good idea, if you got good photos. My family loves to get photobooks of my travels and they don;t even travel with me. My favorite sites for making photobooks at Mixbook and MyPublisher. Both pretty much constantly have specials. I think MyPublisher's product is the most professional looking (although the deluxe leather bound Mixbook I just got is pretty awesome). Mixbook is a lot of fun to use and has these cool "stamps" that you can use to enhance your pages and I really like using them for vacation books. Allow yourself plenty of time to make the books, getting it right is time consuming but really well worth the effort.

My Publisher has a "buy one photobook get one free" promotion for new customers. Buy two get two free. You could get several made for all of her family. Generally these must all be identical. But you could write a message at the front for all of them telling them how much the gift meant to you. Tip: Do not be daunted by adding extra pages. In the end it really doesn't add that much to the cost and it really adds a lot to the book. Also, they have reprint sales from time to time and it doesn't matter how many pages the books have, so that makes the extra pages an even better value. Book jackets really add to the professional appearance.

Here's an oil painting place but the prices are a bit over your stated limit:

Synchronicity, BTW. I just finished forwarding quotes on a vacation to Costa Rica this summer to my friends and then came here to check on deals.woot.

I love your idea. Any well thought out token of your appreciation will be perfect.

They sound very family orientated so I'd say go for the memory of the trip gift... photo would be great, scrap book, or even a photo book of the pictures of the trip. That will mean more to them that something that you "bought".
