How many tools is too many?
Greetings friends,
Just got myself a 1974 Ford Gran Torino with flame throwers in the pipes... She needs work though, and never having worked on cars much, I've been shopping for deals on tool sets. Prolly going to go with Craftsman, I have a Sears practically next door..
BUT - The sets they sell range wildly from a hundred to a thousand tools! Jeez, I can't THINK of a hundred tools...
I'd need to do some reasonable engine, rear end, and electrical work.
I'm thinking a big toolbox with about 250 tools in there should cover most of my needs.. What do you think? How many tools do I need, and how far can this really go?
Thanks y'alls...

Craftsman is a good choice, can't beat the lifetime warranty with a Sears next door. As far as tools go, get a basic big box and you will get an idea of what you use and lose the most of, so get doubles or triples of those.
Grab yourself a Chilton (or similar) and search for ANY part that would require a specialty tool. Then talk to your local shops/auto-part stores/junk yards and see if they have a loaner program for any specialty tools/pullers that you may need.
Congratulations on an awesome buy of an epic car. Post pics when you can.
Thanks for the reply and encouragement. I needed a project...
Wanna pic? Here you go... :)

edit - guess no images in deals.woot forums? bummer
Cool ride. Good luck getting up to your dream car specs! Hope it all works out - keep us posted!
Bear in mind that a lot of sets will include both an English and Metric set of (e.g.) sockets or open-end wrenches. For your vehicle, you will only need English, and will only use half the tools in the set. Look for an English-only set of (Craftsman) sockets (including deep sockets) and open-end wrenches. The other poster was correct about specialty tools -- most of them you'll only use once, so a loaner program is best.
There is no such thing as "too many tools". A bunch of tools, yes; a lot of tools, yes; too many tools - no such animal.
@mtm2: yeah, it's like having too many shoes.
How many tools can one man own???
Don't ask stupid questions!!!!
@lavikinga: Shoes??? What do shoes have to do with working on cars???
437. Anything over 436 tools is just ridiculous.
@lavikinga: Dear God, not the female/shoes argument....I've lost too many of those to start another one.
I actually have to admit (as someone that has more tools than the average contractor) that you only have too many tools when you run out of places to store them. I have completely filled 2 5ft tall tool chests with hand tools and have an entire room full of power tools and replacement parts for odds and ends. The nice part is that I can do just about any job inside or out on a home without having to run out to get a tool. The bad news is that I've purchased things that I doubt I'll ever use again. But for the most part, if you buy quality tools, you'll be able to get most of what you put into them back if/when you decide you want to sell them.
that's like asking how much can your heart love....there is NO limit!!! girls should get more comfortable with tools, i think. there is freedom in being able to run an electric saw, etc., etc., etc.
Tools and too many shouldnt be in the same sentence.
@hobbitss: it was an analogy. My dad never gave my mom grief because he understood even though while tools, the same as shoes or guns or knives or fishing lures, can multi-task, sometimes you just HAVE to have that particular screwdriver, wrench or hammer. In his case, he has duplicates in both his winter & summer houses. He's a snowbird these days and got tired of trying to keep straight what he had where. One of the best things he ever did for me was teach me how to work on my first car: '69 Bug. "OK. Take off the damned jewelry and tie up your hair..."
bad a$$ car. even cars have shoes, they're called tires :)
@w00tgurl: Cars also have shoes in the brakes.
