Furniture spammer is back
In fact, he was hitting Fresh so hard that I got a server time out error the first three times I tried to hit the Tattle button.

Um. Whoa. You guys over on the clean up side are quick. Q U I C K!!! Impressive. I hates the spammers, yes indeed I do. Shootin's too good fer 'em, hangin's a waste of a rope. I say we pitch them in the middle of the river, and turn them into fish food.
Strangely enough, the suggested similar deal was for "Back to the Future Flux Capacitor T-Shirt for $5.99". That's just funny in so many weird ways.
@shrdlu: Guy filled page one of fresh in under 10 mins...
Oh I am on this like a fat kid loves cake!
@mbrugnoni: Yes. This is either the second or third time I've seen him, too. I HATE him. Then again, I've always hated spammers, from back in Usenet/Clarence L. Thomas IV days. Yep, long ago and far away...
@prettywootprincess: Yeah? He's back, already.
@shrdlu: I am about to wring this persons neck through the computer, I cant sit here all night hitting delete! I will try my best to keep it clean for as long as I can.
@shrdlu: FYI, the server error was not a timeout error... The servers can handle lots of traffic. The issue seems to be that if you tattle on a post that is less than 30 seconds old, sometimes you might get an error. For now if you get an error when tattling on a new post, wait a minute or 2 and try again. We will work on fixing this after the holidays.
@shrdlu: furniture is dumb... i'm moving to the floor.
@josefresno: Interesting. Next time I see the creature sneak in, I'll give it sixty seconds. I still say you've got to block new accounts (note the creation date on his account, which is in the future for me over in the Pacific time zone). I think you've got to block people who can't vote. Please, tell Snapster you heard me weeping, sadly. Whatever you think it'll take.
@prettywootprincess: Shrdlu /= dude.
Still, all is forgiven. Delete away.
@shrdlu: lol "non-frilly female" crying does make men work faster!
@mbrugnoni: I sleep on a futon. Same thing.
@prettywootprincess: Shrdlu /= girl. Adult. Just not male. Female. Shrdlu is the least frilly female you will ever know. I've heard it said that in a group of Alpha Males, I'm still the Alpha. Rowr!
@shrdlu: Better?
@prettywootprincess: Yep. Too bad for spammers. I stay up pretty late (and it's barely 9:14PM at my house). Thanks for killing...
Thanks for taking care of spammers. Woot does care!
I have this vision of a frothing at the mouth shrdlu compulsively marching back to her computer every 10-15 mins, watching the deals.woot gates, just daring anyone to trespass...
@SecretAgentWoman: I'm a bit more efficient than that. Cold and calm is always more frightening anyway.
Hey, pretty woot princes. Spammer is back again. We hate him.
with the aid of the reputation triangle on the fresh tab itself, it won't take very long for folks entering a large quantity of non-deals to tire of the effort. On the otherhand, the system is handled just for this sort of thing to happen without it being offensive - just skip by them - they aren't making it anywhere...
@shrdlu: Ok, now I'm positive. You're my sister and you've gotten a new screen name. We must harness your powers for Good. :)
@LaVikinga: There is no good Shrdlu. There is only Chaotic Evil Shrdlu. God, I miss playing D&D. That was some crazy goofy fun. Actually, my nature IS mostly chaotic neutral. Not kidding.
@shrdlu: Aghh sorry I went to sleep, he tired me out! I fail!
@prettywootprincess: You can make it up. Please please PLEASE go delete the post over on Ask that I reported. Kids are home today, and it's really out of line. I don't know that the person posting it really thought things through. Karma for poster should take a hit, too (yes, I'm mean, but I'm not wrong).
I just want to say thanks to prettywootprincess for helping us clean up the existing spammer issue; and to the community as a whole for letting us know. Keep reporting abuse; either via posts on the questions board or via tattles. I assure you we are listening.
@russchott: Absolutely. She's our hero.
While this may alienate a small segment of the site - perhaps posting of new deals should be limited only to wooters who have purchased 3 or more items (or whatever arbitrary number greater than zero is deemed appropriate)
This would, at least ensure that the wooter is a real person, interested in the site - and not just someone creating bogus accounts to leech off of woot's popularity.
@goatcrapp: very nice idea, I am sure we will meet over solutions sometime this week to all this.
@shrdlu: The Tattles go to someone else at the moment, but the post if not made popular should drop off. If it is still there let me know.
and I second what Russ says, thanks for keeping us updated.
Ok, so what'd I miss?
@sgoman5674: Please go over and help vote up poor Hobbit's plea for help.
Must be sundown where you live, then. I figure kosher keeping == shabbat observing, so I didn't expect you before now, anyway. You missed huge argument on XXX stuff (now resolved thanks to woot staffer guy, and I'm grateful).
Oh, and welcome back.
@shrdlu: Yeah. I live in NY, but I can't get to a comp until 8ish my time. Plus shopping yesterday....
By plea for help do you mean her headbanging habit?
@sgoman5674: I meant the one over in Fresh. "Why is the Commented on linky thing not working?" Hobbit has apparently broken her account. I sent off a description to service at woot (being a little more technical than hobbit, I figured I might as well), but they're out until Monday (which is as it should be). Two more votes it would break the Popular barrier.
@shrdlu: oooooooo I might become popular!
erm I think this poster might be a spammer.....joined on the 26th... ssmpike has two pages of posts all for emailgroup.com I know shrdlu will look into it :D
@Hobbit: Popularity was the idea (in this case), since it's more likely that the developers/problem solvers over in the land of Woot will see it. In the Fresh tab, it had a high probability of falling off the first page before Monday, where it would not have been seen. Yes, this is gaming the system, but for a good cause. ;-}
@Hobbit: Did you use Tattle? You should have. Yes, that particular web site is somewhat suspect. My largest concern is that there could be an attempt to harvest email addresses from it. Actually, this is where Reputation comes in. As more users gravitate to Deals, it will be harder and harder for creatures such as this to be successful (kudos again to whomever came up with the idea).
@shrdlu: wanted to make sure the website was actually suspect first...I don't buy a lot of tech stuff online except at woot or woot referred websites.
going to tattle now....why do I feel like I am in kindergarten?
btw broadwaylinen is back and spamming the fresh again.....which bugs me because my deal that I posted and the deals I posted yesterday are buried...I swear I am going to make a post over here to announce I posted deals.....
@Hobbit: Although I'm sure you're kidding, announcing you've posted deals probably isn't the best way to win friends and Reputation. Good deals work their way up quickly.
Yes, I know that I posted about posting a deal, but not for it to be popular (it amazed me, seriously, that it did). I had wanted to understand specific questions (especially the one about having trouble with pictures), and the only way I could see through to understanding was to do it. Thinking of something I would actually want to post made my brain hurt.
Posting here about spammers is not as useful as using Tattle. One hopes that you are merely venting here, but also reporting there. As Reputation becomes more obvious, I think much of this will disappear. On the other hand, people that suck are always with us.
@shrdlu: I was kidding.......I wouldn't do that, I am not 12 it just frustrates me that the spammers bury the really good deals so you can't even make it to the popular page, unless folks go vote for you.
@Hobbit: I don't think I'm the only person that sits on the Fresh tab. I've seen things go to Popular in 10 minutes (but they were pretty geeky things). As more women arrive on the site, it'll get better. It may be that we need to encourage women to watch the Fresh tab more often, since appealing things might not be ABLE to be voted up.
Don't forget that new accounts aren't going to be able to vote, so just because someone's happy about what you've posted doesn't mean that it's going to ever hit Popular.
